A five-person team with 1,000 AI-resolved conversations a month pays about $2,295 on Zendesk Suite Team if it buys seats monthly and AI resolutions pay-as-you-go. With annual seats and committed resolutions, that falls to $1,737.50. Most Zendesk alternatives cut that bill, some by a lot, and some only look cheaper until you notice what they leave out. This guide prices nine of them for the same three teams, tells you what each one gives up, and says who should stay on Zendesk.
Disclosure first: Talvo makes one of the tools below. It sits in the list on its merits, with its gaps spelled out, and it isn't the answer for everyone. Several tools here beat it on channels, compliance or price at certain sizes. All vendor numbers come from the vendors' own pricing pages and help centers, checked October 21, 2026.
Zendesk alternatives for small teams, priced for the same three teams
Team A is 3 agents with 300 AI-resolved conversations a month. Team B is 5 agents with 1,000. Team C is 10 agents with 3,000. All figures are monthly billing, list prices in US dollars, before tax. Each tool is priced on the cheapest plan that includes live chat and an AI agent, and the AI line is that vendor's own meter applied to the numbers above.
| Tool | Team A (3 / 300) | Team B (5 / 1,000) | Team C (10 / 3,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Suite Team | $777 | $2,295 | $6,590 |
| Talvo | $147 | $299 | $789 |
| Help Scout Standard | $315 | $900 | $2,550 |
| Freshdesk Omni Growth | $252 | $665 | $1,820 |
| Crisp (usage-billed AI, estimated) | $55 to $70 | $120 to $170 | $220 to $370 |
| Intercom (now Fin) Essential | $414 | $1,185 | $3,360 |
| Tidio Growth + Lyro (assumes 600 / 1,000 / 2,000 human-handled conversations) | $339 | $879 | Lyro isn't sold self-serve at 3,000 |
| LiveChat Essential | $372 | $1,115 | $3,220 |
| HubSpot Service Hub Professional (plus $1,500 onboarding) | $420 | $970 | $2,470 |
| Chatwoot Cloud Startups (seats only) | $57 | $95 | $190 |
Read the table as a map, not a ranking. A few cells need explaining:
- Zendesk is priced at $69 per seat monthly plus $2.00 for each resolution beyond the 5 per agent a month it includes. The annual, committed version is $592.50, $1,737.50 and $4,975.
- Crisp, Tidio and Chatwoot don't bill per resolution. Crisp and Tidio bill on AI usage or conversations the AI touched, including ones handed off, so real bills run higher if your AI hands off often. Team A's Crisp range is for Mini; Essentials, which adds the knowledge base and AI knowledge training, would be $95 to $100. Chatwoot's AI credits can't be converted into a per-resolution price from its pricing page, so we show seats only.
- HubSpot charges $0.50 per resolved conversation (50 credits) after the 3,000 credits Professional includes each month. The row adds those credits to $100 seats and leaves out the $1,500 one-time onboarding fee.
- Freshdesk Omni is priced at $35 per agent monthly plus $0.49 per Freddy session. Its AI meter counts sessions, not resolutions. The table ignores the one-time 500 free sessions, which would cover Team A's first month.
Annual billing lowers most rows: Talvo is $119, $249 and $739; Help Scout is $300, $875 and $2,500; Intercom is $384, $1,135 and $3,260; LiveChat is $354, $1,085 and $3,160; Tidio is $282.50 and $732.50 for A and B; Freshdesk Omni is $234, $635 and $1,760. The calculator below uses list prices, with Zendesk at the $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate.
- Crisp Essentials~$120–$170/mo$95 per workspace + AI at Crisp's estimate of $0.05–$0.10 per conversation, less $25 of included credits · Estimate: top-up rate and annual prices aren't published
- Talvo Scale$299/mo$299 per workspace, 2,000 AI resolutions included
- Help Scout Standard$900/mo5 users × $30 + 1,000 AI resolutions × $0.75
- Intercom (Fin) Essential$1,185/mo5 seats × $39 + 1,000 Fin outcomes × $0.99 · Workflow automation needs Advanced ($85–$99 per seat)
- Zendesk Suite Team$2,295/mo5 agents × $69 + 975 AI resolutions × $2.00 (25 included) · $1.50 each with a committed 100+ purchase
Estimates from each vendor's published list prices, checked October 21, 2026. Assumes the cheapest plan that includes live chat and an AI agent, and that every AI-resolved conversation is billable. Excludes taxes, promotions, add-ons (such as agent copilots) and per-use channels like SMS or WhatsApp. Talvo's annual price includes extra resolutions at the same $0.49, billed once a year.
What you're comparing against: the Zendesk bill
Two things about Zendesk's price catch people out. First, the $19 you see advertised is Support Team, which is email and ticketing only. Live chat, messaging and the full AI agent start at Suite Team, $55 per agent on annual billing and $69 monthly. Second, Suite Team includes just 5 AI resolutions per agent per month, as a yearly pool capped at 10,000 per account, and every resolution beyond that costs $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. The whole plan grid, every add-on and the billing rules are in Zendesk pricing in 2026, and the head-to-head with Talvo is Talvo vs Zendesk. Here the Zendesk row is the baseline.
What "resolution" means at each vendor
Before comparing AI prices, compare what's being counted. These are the vendors' own definitions, shortened.
| Vendor | What the AI is billed on |
|---|---|
| Zendesk | A "verified" resolution: an LLM reviews the transcript and confirms the AI resolved it. Contained and assisted-escalation outcomes don't count against the allowance. |
| Intercom (Fin) | An "outcome": the customer confirms it's resolved, or doesn't ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a Procedure, including handoffs. Once per conversation. |
| Help Scout | A single AI chat session resolved without human help. Escalating, searching the knowledge base further or pressing "I still need help" voids the charge. |
| Freshdesk (Freddy) | A session: all interactions within 24 hours on chat, or 72 hours from the first email, counted per interaction window rather than per resolution. |
| Crisp (Hugo) | AI usage in credits, from the first AI-handled message until the conversation is resolved, routed or escalated. Escalated chats still use credits. |
| Tidio (Lyro) | A conversation with at least one Lyro reply. Tidio's help center adds that a thread closes after 15 minutes of inactivity and a new message counts again. |
| LiveChat | "One resolution = the AI directly solved a customer question." |
| Talvo | A conversation the AI answered end to end from published articles with no teammate stepping in. Hand-offs are never billed. |
Help Scout, Zendesk and Talvo bill the narrowest thing: a result the AI finished. Fin's definition is looser, and Freshdesk, Crisp and Tidio bill activity rather than outcomes. A cheap rate per unit can still make an expensive month if the unit is "every chat the AI touched." Our AI resolution pricing comparison goes deeper on the definitions.
The alternatives, one at a time
Four tools get a full pro-and-con box because they are the realistic shortlist for most Zendesk leavers. The rest get a paragraph, with a link to a deeper post where we have one.
Help Scout: the email-first pick with the cheapest AI of the big three
Help Scout is Zendesk's support desk with the volume turned down: a clean, email-like shared inbox with a knowledge base (Docs), a chat widget (Beacon), workflows and reporting, priced per user at $25 annual or $30 monthly on Standard, up to 25 users. Its AI agent costs $0.75 per resolution, billed monthly in arrears with a spending cap you set, and new accounts get three free months of AI resolutions.
The definition is strict in your favor: escalating or pressing "I still need help" means no charge. That makes $0.75 the cheapest per-resolution rate among Zendesk, Fin and Help Scout (Talvo's $0.49 is lower, and Crisp, Tidio and Freshdesk bill activity rather than outcomes at lower unit prices). The trade is that seats still scale with headcount, the 26th user forces you onto Plus, and voice works only through an integration such as Aircall. Help Scout reports SOC 2 Type 2 and offers HIPAA with a signed BAA. We price it in full in Help Scout pricing.
- Clean email-like inbox that reviewers praise for ease of use
- Escalations and "I still need help" aren't billed
- SOC 2 Type 2; HIPAA on Pro, or as an add-on on Plus
- AI writing tools included on higher tiers
- Per-user pricing, capped at 25 users on Standard and 50 on Plus
- No native phone: voice only through an integration
Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni: Zendesk-style ticketing at lower seat prices
If you like how Zendesk works and mainly dislike the price, Freshworks is the nearest sibling. Freshdesk is email-first ticketing: Growth is $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent per month on annual billing. Freshdesk Omni adds chat and messaging at $29, $79 and $119. Monthly billing is $23, $66 and $107 for Freshdesk, and $35, $95 and $143 for Omni. Freshchat is free for up to 10 agents if all you need is chat.
Freddy, the AI agent, bills per session: 500 sessions are free once per account, then $49 per 100, about $0.49 each. A chat session covers 24 hours of interactions and an email session 72 hours, and sessions are counted per interaction window, not per resolution. Freshworks lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and SAML SSO on all three Freshdesk tiers, but not HIPAA. Capterra reviewers praise ease of use and quick setup, and report bugs, weak email management and billing disputes.
- Familiar ticketing at a lower per-agent price than Zendesk
- SAML SSO on every tier, plus SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001
- Sessions aren't resolutions: the meter counts interaction windows, not outcomes
- Reviewers cite bugs, billing disputes and costs rising by tier
Crisp: flat workspace pricing, with the AI billed on usage
Crisp charges per workspace instead of per seat, which is why its row is so low: Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats and Essentials is $95 for 10, then Plus at $295. Essentials is where most of the useful parts live, including WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS and phone. Hugo, the AI agent, runs on dollar credits and Crisp estimates $0.05 to $0.10 per conversation. The cost of the low price is that Crisp says it hasn't been through a SOC 2 audit and doesn't mention HIPAA or SAML SSO. The seat cliffs and credit math are in Crisp pricing, and the feature comparison with Talvo is Talvo vs Crisp.
Talvo: one workspace price, $0.49 per AI resolution, and a long gap list
Talvo is the one we make. Pricing is per workspace: Starter is $49 a month ($39 annual) for 5 teammates and 100 AI resolutions, Growth is $149 ($119) for 15 teammates and 500, and Scale is $299 ($249) for 25 teammates and 2,000. Extra resolutions are $0.49 each on every paid plan, and teammates up to the plan limit never change the bill. That's where its row comes from: Team A on Starter at $147, Team B on Scale at $299, Team C on Scale plus 1,000 extra resolutions at $789.
Its AI agent answers only from your published help articles, cites the article it used, and hands off to a human with the thread intact when it isn't confident. Hand-offs are never billed. It replies in the customer's language, and the copilot drafts replies for your team to send or edit.

What you get beyond the AI: a shared inbox with two-way email and internal notes, a hosted help center, NPS and custom surveys and booking pages (Starter), on top of the CSAT star rating every plan gets, and routing rules, SLA policies and no-code workflows (Growth). What you don't: phone, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Messenger (the last three are on the roadmap), a customer ticket portal, SOC 2, SAML SSO, HIPAA, data-region choice, or Zapier and native Shopify, HubSpot or Salesforce integrations. Talvo is new, in beta, and has no reviews on G2 or Capterra.

- One workspace price; teammates up to the plan limit are free
- $0.49 per AI resolution with hand-offs never billed
- Free plan for 2 teammates; month-to-month paid plans
- Imports a Zendesk help center and contacts
- Chat and email only; no phone, WhatsApp, SMS or social
- No SOC 2, SAML SSO, HIPAA or region choice
- Beta product with no reviews yet; past tickets don't migrate
Intercom (now Fin): the polished messenger, with the most expensive AI line here
Intercom, renamed Fin in May 2026 and acquired by Salesforce in September, sells helpdesk seats at $39 monthly ($29 annual) on Essential plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome. It has the broadest channel list of the chat-first tools (phone, WhatsApp and SMS are usage-billed), SOC 2 Type II, and HIPAA and SSO on Expert. Intercom says its marketplace lists 450+ apps. Reviewers praise the messenger and the AI's quality.
It's cheaper than Zendesk in the table, but the AI line makes it expensive: $990 of Team B's $1,185. Its outcome definition also counts a customer who simply stops replying after an answer. If you qualify for Intercom's Early Stage startup program, the discount (listed at 93% off, with a year of Fin free) may beat every other option here. See Intercom pricing, Talvo vs Intercom and cheaper Intercom alternatives.
- Strong reputation for the messenger and AI quality
- Phone, WhatsApp, SMS and social channels
- SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and SSO on Expert, US/EU/AU hosting
- $0.99 per outcome, and quiet customers can count as outcomes
- Per-seat pricing plus usage-billed channels is hard to forecast
- Product tours and surveys sit in a separate add-on
Tidio, LiveChat, HubSpot and Chatwoot in brief
Tidio is the small-store pick. It bills by the conversations a human agent replies to rather than seats, and Lyro, its AI, is a separate meter at roughly $0.70 a conversation. Hitting the human-conversation limit stops you replying until the next cycle, and 3,000 AI conversations a month is beyond self-serve. See Tidio pricing and Talvo vs Tidio.
LiveChat is a polished chat-first console priced per user: Essential is $19 annual or $25 monthly. The AI is included but small, with 10 resolutions a month on Essential, then packs of 50 for $49.50, about $0.99 each, which is why at Team B $990 of the $1,115 is AI. It reports SOC 2 Type 2, and Capterra reviewers rate it around 4.6 from about 1,700 reviews, with complaints about price and add-ons. Some third-party Marketplace apps carry their own fees, so check any you rely on.
HubSpot Service Hub makes sense if you already live in HubSpot, because the shared contact record is the point. The free tier covers 2 users with branded live chat. Professional shows $90 and $100 per seat ($100 is the monthly price in HubSpot's catalog, $90 the annual one), plus a required $1,500 one-time onboarding fee. Its Customer Agent is $0.50 per resolved conversation (50 credits) on Professional and Enterprise, and the table adds that to the seats once the 3,000 included credits run out. Reviewers praise the CRM link and report a steep learning curve and thin ticketing.
Chatwoot is open source, and its cloud plans are the cheapest per-agent route to an omnichannel inbox: Startups is $19 per agent monthly, Business $39 and Enterprise $99 (adds SSO/SAML and audit logs). Its Captain AI uses credits the page doesn't convert into a per-resolution price, so we show seats only. You can self-host the Community Edition free, but that means Docker, server skills and your own maintenance time.
Gorgias, Front and others
Gorgias is built for Shopify and other ecommerce stores: pricing is by ticket volume, not seats, and its differentiator is order actions such as cancel and refund from inside the ticket. Each AI interaction (roughly $0.90 to $1.00) also counts as a ticket, and a ticket-volume model can't be priced from a headcount, so it isn't in the table. Front is an email-first collaboration inbox: Starter is $25 per seat on annual billing for up to 10 seats.
Free Zendesk alternatives, and where they stop
Zendesk has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. Most alternatives do, and the limits matter more than the price.
| Tool | What the free plan includes | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Talvo Free | 2 teammates, chat widget, two-way email, shared inbox, hosted help center, feedback board | 25 AI resolutions a month during the beta; no copilot; NPS and custom surveys start on Starter (the CSAT star rating is on every plan) |
| Crisp Free | 2 seats, chat widget, contact form, shared inbox | 100 customer profiles; no email channel, no AI agent |
| HubSpot Free | Up to 2 users, branded live chat, limited bots, email | HubSpot branding on chat and email |
| Help Scout Free | 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site | 100 contacts a month; replies stop at the cap; 30-day reports |
| Tidio Free | 10 seats, 50 billable conversations | 50 lifetime Lyro AI conversations |
| Freshchat Free | Up to 10 agents, widget, inbox | Chat only |
| Chatwoot Hacker | Up to 2 agents | Live chat only, 500 conversations a month |
What you may give up when you leave Zendesk
Zendesk's strength isn't any single feature; it's that voice, ticketing depth, compliance and an ecosystem all sit in one vendor. Here's how the alternatives cover the usual requirements.
| Phone / voice | SOC 2 | HIPAA | SSO | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk | Yes (numbers and minutes are add-ons) | Yes | Type II | BAA, with Advanced Compliance add-on | SAML or JWT |
| Help Scout | Via integration (e.g. Aircall) | Yes | Type 2 | Pro included; Plus add-on | Pro included; add-on on Standard and Plus |
| Freshdesk / Freshchat | Via Freshcaller | Freshchat Growth and up | Type 2 | Not listed | SAML on all Freshdesk tiers |
| Crisp | Essentials and up | Essentials and up | No audit | Not mentioned | Not mentioned |
| Talvo | No | No | No | No | No |
| Intercom (Fin) | Usage-billed | Usage-billed | Type II | Expert plan | Expert plan |
| Tidio | Not listed | All plans | "Examination completed" (type not stated) | Not mentioned | Premium only |
| LiveChat | Not mentioned | Listed as an integration | Type 2 | Not mentioned | Enterprise only |
| HubSpot | Calling minutes included | Yes, capped | Type 2 | Not mentioned | Enterprise only |
| Chatwoot | Business and up | Not itemized | Type II announced | No | Enterprise only |
If you're regulated, handle health data or have enterprise buyers sending security questionnaires, Talvo and Crisp are out, and the shortlist is Help Scout (Pro), Intercom (Expert) or staying put; Freshdesk lists SOC 2 and SAML SSO but not HIPAA. If a meaningful share of your customers call you, Zendesk, Intercom, HubSpot, Crisp (Essentials) and Chatwoot (Business) handle phone themselves, Help Scout and Freshdesk do it through integrations, and Talvo can't.
Which Zendesk alternative fits which team

| Chat across many channels, flat price, EU-friendly | Crisp |
| Chat and email, high AI volume, willing to be early | Talvo |
| Budget for the best-reviewed AI and messenger | Intercom (Fin) |
| A Shopify or WordPress store with light human volume | Tidio, or Gorgias for Shopify order actions |
| Already on HubSpot CRM | HubSpot Service Hub |
| Technical and want open source | Chatwoot |
| On the phone all day, or handling PHI | Stay on Zendesk, or check Help Scout Pro |
Switching from Zendesk without losing your help center
Whichever tool you pick, help center and contacts move, tickets mostly don't, and automations get rebuilt. Here is the order that costs least, using Talvo as the example because we can vouch for its steps.
- Run the new tool next to ZendeskInstall the widget on a slice of your traffic or a staging page. Don't cancel yet.
- Move your help centerTalvo reads your public Zendesk help center from its address and imports the articles as drafts (how). Publish what's accurate, because the AI only answers from published articles.
- Move your contactsExport people from Zendesk as a CSV and import them. Talvo matches by email, so re-runs are safe.
- Forward your support emailPoint your support address at the new inbox so replies thread back into one conversation.
- Rebuild automations by handMacros become canned responses; triggers become routing rules or workflows. No tool converts these for you.
- Cancel at renewalZendesk applies downgrades and seat reductions at the next billing cycle with no prorated refund, so time the cancellation.

Two warnings. Talvo doesn't import past tickets, and most tools import only a limited amount, so export what you need from Zendesk before the contract ends. And the AI answers only as well as your articles allow, so watch what gets handed off during the parallel run; writing help articles an AI can answer from covers fixing the gaps.
- Do any customers reach you by phone or WhatsApp?
- Will a security questionnaire, SOC 2 report, SAML SSO or HIPAA BAA come up?
- How many people will answer customers a year from now, not today?
- How many conversations will the AI fully resolve per month, and how is each vendor counting them?
- Do you need a customer-facing ticket portal or just a help center?
- Is your help center public, so it can be imported?
Zendesk alternatives: a fair verdict
Stay on Zendesk if you need what it's best at: phone and IVR, deep ticketing with SLAs and a customer portal across a larger team, WhatsApp and social channels together, and compliance paperwork such as SOC 2 Type II, a HIPAA BAA or data residency. For a team with that profile, the bill is the price of the capability and most alternatives here don't replace it.
Leave if your team is small, answers mostly through chat and email, and the combination of per-agent seats and per-resolution AI is the reason your Zendesk invoice surprises you. Among the alternatives, Help Scout is the safest pick for email-first teams, Freshdesk is the closest to Zendesk at lower seat prices, Crisp is the cheapest at these volumes for a channel-rich inbox, and Talvo is the cheapest at high AI volume among the tools with a per-resolution price, if you can accept a beta product without phone, WhatsApp or SOC 2. The pricing grid at talvo.chat/pricing is the quickest way to price your own workspace, and our roundup of best live chat software for small business is the better starting point if chat is all you need.
Which should you choose?
- your team is small, answers by chat and email, and per-agent seats plus per-resolution AI is why your Zendesk invoice surprises you
- you want AI answers that cite your help articles at $0.49 a resolution, with hand-offs never billed
- you want one workspace price that doesn't rise when you add a teammate, up to the plan limit
- you can accept a beta product with no reviews and none of phone, WhatsApp, SOC 2 or SSO
- customers contact you by phone, WhatsApp or social messaging
- you need SOC 2 Type II, a HIPAA BAA, data residency or SAML single sign-on
- you need deep ticketing, SLAs or a customer ticket portal across a larger team
- you depend on more than 1,000 prebuilt integrations
- you would rather stay with a long-established vendor and its public review record
Frequently asked questions
What is cheaper than Zendesk for a small business?
Nearly every alternative here is cheaper at small-team volumes. For 5 agents and 1,000 AI resolutions a month, list prices come to roughly $2,295 on Zendesk Suite Team against $299 on Talvo, $900 on Help Scout, $665 on Freshdesk Omni and an estimated $120 to $170 on Crisp. Cheaper is not the same as equivalent, because each tool covers different channels and compliance needs.
Is there a free Zendesk alternative?
Several tools have free plans: Talvo (2 teammates), Crisp (2 seats), HubSpot (2 users), Help Scout (5 users, 100 contacts a month), Tidio (50 conversations), Freshchat (up to 10 agents, chat only) and Chatwoot's Hacker plan (2 agents). Zendesk itself has only a 14-day trial. Each free plan has hard limits, so check the limit before you depend on one.
Does Zendesk charge for AI resolutions?
Yes. Zendesk includes 5 automated resolutions per agent per month on Suite Team, as a yearly pool capped at 10,000 per account, then charges $1.50 each when committed (100 or more bought ahead) or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk's help article says contained and assisted-escalation outcomes do not count against the allowance, which implies only LLM-verified resolutions do.
Which Zendesk plan includes live chat?
Suite Team and above. Support Team, the $19 per agent plan on annual billing ($25 monthly), is email and ticketing only. Suite Team is $55 per agent annually or $69 monthly.
Is Freshdesk better than Zendesk for a small team?
It is often cheaper per seat: Freshdesk is $19, $55 and $89 per agent on annual billing, and Freshdesk Omni with chat is $29, $79 and $119. Its AI, Freddy, bills per session at about $0.49 after 500 free, and sessions are counted per interaction window, not per resolution. Freshworks lists SOC 2 Type 2 and SAML SSO on all Freshdesk tiers. Monthly billing is $23, $66 and $107 per agent for Freshdesk, and $35, $95 and $143 for Omni.
Is Zendesk overkill for a small business?
For a small team that answers mostly through chat and email, often yes: you pay per agent for voice, portals and routing you may never use, and AI resolutions cost $1.50 to $2.00 beyond a small allowance. It is not overkill if you take phone calls, need a customer portal or have to meet SOC 2, HIPAA or data-residency requirements.
Can I move my Zendesk help center to another tool?
Usually the public articles can move. Talvo, for example, reads your public Zendesk help center from its address and imports up to 2,000 articles as drafts, and takes contacts by CSV. Past tickets, private articles and automations do not transfer, so export what you need to keep before your Zendesk term ends.
