The cheaper Intercom alternative depends on how many people answer customers and how many conversations you want the AI to take. Intercom (now Fin) charges $39 per seat on monthly billing plus $0.99 every time its AI agent finishes a conversation. A two-person team with 100 AI answers a month pays $177. A ten-person team with 1,500 pays $1,875. Every alternative below was priced against those same three teams, from the vendors' own pricing pages, checked October 21, 2026.
Disclosure first: Talvo makes one of these products. It sits in the list on its merits, with its gaps spelled out, and it is not the answer for everyone. Several tools below beat it on channels, compliance or price at certain sizes.
Cheaper Intercom alternatives for three team sizes, and what each costs
Team A is 2 people with 100 AI-answered conversations a month. Team B is 5 people with 500. Team C is 10 people with 1,500. All figures are monthly billing, in US dollars, before tax. Where a tool publishes a cheaper annual price, it's noted in that tool's section.
| Tool | Team A (2 / 100) | Team B (5 / 500) | Team C (10 / 1,500) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom (now Fin), Essential | $177 | $690 | $1,875 |
| Crisp | about $45 to $50 | about $95 to $120 | about $145 to $220 |
| Talvo | $49 | $149 | $299 |
| Help Scout | $135 | $525 | $1,425 |
| Tidio (assumes 100 / 400 / 1,000 human-handled conversations) | $104 | $439 | about $1,230 |
| Freshchat (annual billing only) | $87 | $340 | $925 |
| Chatwoot Cloud | $38 seats, AI usage unpriced | $95 seats, AI usage unpriced | $190 seats, AI usage unpriced |
| LiveChat | $149 | $620 | $1,735 |
| Zendesk Suite Team | $318 | $1,058 to $1,295 | $2,865 to $3,590 |
| Front Starter (annual billing only) | $50 plus AI | $125 plus AI | $250 plus AI |
| HubSpot Service Hub | Not reliably priceable | Not reliably priceable | Not reliably priceable |
| Gorgias (ecommerce, ticket assumptions below) | $123 to $150 | $639 to $810 | $1,725 to $2,250 |
Read the table as a map, not a ranking. A cheap line can hide a missing channel, and some cells are estimates because the vendor doesn't publish the AI rate. The sections below say which.
Try your own numbers below. The calculator uses list prices and shows Crisp as an estimated range (its own $0.05 to $0.10 per AI conversation, minus included credits) on whichever Crisp tier is cheapest, so it can read lower than the table, which prices Crisp on Essentials. Zendesk is shown at the $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate.
- Crisp Mini~$75–$100/mo$45 per workspace + 1 agents × $10 + AI at Crisp's estimate of $0.05–$0.10 per conversation, less $5 of included credits · Estimate: top-up rate and annual prices aren't published
- Talvo Growth$149/mo$149 per workspace, 500 AI resolutions included
- Help Scout Standard$525/mo5 users × $30 + 500 AI resolutions × $0.75
- Intercom (Fin) Essential$690/mo5 seats × $39 + 500 Fin outcomes × $0.99 · Workflow automation needs Advanced ($85–$99 per seat)
- Zendesk Suite Team$1,295/mo5 agents × $69 + 475 AI resolutions × $2.00 (25 included) · $1.50 each with a committed 100+ purchase
Estimates from each vendor's published list prices, checked October 21, 2026. Assumes the cheapest plan that includes live chat and an AI agent, and that every AI-resolved conversation is billable. Excludes taxes, promotions, add-ons (such as agent copilots) and per-use channels like SMS or WhatsApp. Talvo's annual price includes extra resolutions at the same $0.49, billed once a year.
Crisp: the cheapest on paper, with a catch in the AI bill
Crisp is the one to beat on price. It charges per workspace, not per seat: Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats, Essentials is $95 for 10, and Plus is $295. Extra agents are $10 each. Its AI agent, Hugo, runs on dollar credits instead of a per-resolution fee. Mini includes $5 of credits (Crisp says around 90 automated conversations), Essentials $25 (around 450), Plus $75 (around 1,350). Crisp estimates $0.05 to $0.10 per conversation Hugo handles.
That's where the Team A to C ranges come from. (If you don't need Essentials' knowledge base and workflows, Team B could also take Mini plus one extra agent at $10, about $75 to $100 with AI top-ups, though Mini's 5,000-profile cap is tighter.) Team A fits Mini and a handful of extra credits. Team B fits Essentials and runs slightly past the $25. Team C fits Essentials' 10 seats too, and its 1,500 conversations would burn through the credits, so you'd either top up or move to Plus at $295. Crisp doesn't publish its pay-as-you-go rate for credits, so treat those ranges as estimates.
The important difference from Intercom: Crisp bills AI usage, not resolutions. A conversation Hugo starts and then hands to a human still uses credits. You get a lower rate and less predictable meaning of "one".
Who it's for: small teams, especially EU-based ones, that want many channels (WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, Telegram and more) for a flat price. What you give up: Crisp says plainly it hasn't been through a SOC 2 audit, and it doesn't mention HIPAA or SAML SSO. Customer-profile caps (5,000 on Mini) push people up a tier. Yearly prices aren't published. We compare the two products directly in Talvo vs Crisp.
Talvo: flat price per workspace, strong AI value, plenty of gaps
Talvo bills per workspace too. Starter is $49 a month with 5 teammates and 100 AI resolutions. Growth is $149 with 15 teammates and 500 resolutions. Scale is $299 with 25 teammates and 2,000. Extra resolutions are $0.49 each on every paid plan, and adding a teammate within a plan's limit never changes the bill. Annual billing brings those to $39, $119 and $249.
The arithmetic for our three teams: Team A fits Starter at $49. Team B fits Growth at $149 because 500 resolutions are included. Team C fits Scale at $299 with 2,000 included. Staying on Growth would cost $149 plus 1,000 extra resolutions at $0.49, which is $639, so the bigger plan wins.

A Talvo resolution is a conversation the AI answered from your published knowledge base without a teammate stepping in; a hand-off to a human is never billed (how it's counted). That's comparable to Fin's definition, so the real difference is the price per resolution, $0.49 against $0.99, plus the fact that a plan's allowance is already paid for.

What Talvo does well at this price: live chat, AI agent with cited sources and clean hand-off, shared inbox, two-way email, knowledge base and help center, and on Growth a no-code workflow builder and routing rules, all in one product. See the AI agent and shared inbox pages.
Now the gaps, because a reader should hear them from us. Talvo launched in 2026 and is in beta. It has no customer reviews on G2 or Capterra yet. There's no WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Messenger (they're on the public roadmap), no phone channel, no Zapier, and no native Shopify, HubSpot or Salesforce integration; today's integrations are the REST API, webhooks and Slack. There's no SOC 2 report, SAML SSO, or choice of data region, and data is processed in the United States. It also has no product tours or in-app checklists. If any of those are on your must-have list, move on.
Help Scout: the best inbox for email-first teams, with a capped AI bill
Help Scout charges per user: Standard is $30 monthly ($25 annual), Plus is $54 ($45), Pro is $90 ($75) with a 10-user minimum. Its AI agent, Envoy, costs $0.75 per resolution, and you can set a monthly spending cap that switches it off when reached. New accounts get three months of unlimited free resolutions.
Team A: 2 × $30 + 100 × $0.75 = $135. Team B: 5 × $30 + 500 × $0.75 = $525. Team C: 10 × $30 + 1,500 × $0.75 = $1,425. On annual seats, subtract $10, $25 and $50.
Help Scout counts a resolution strictly. If the customer asks for more help, searches further or clicks "I still need help", it isn't billed, so your real bill can come in under these numbers. Its limit is shape: Standard caps at 25 users, Plus at 50, and the 26th agent forces an upgrade.
It's for support teams whose work is mostly email and who want a calm, human-feeling inbox and a good knowledge base. Phone is only through integrations, and reviewers find reporting thin.
Tidio: cheap to start, three meters to watch
Tidio bills by conversations a human actually handles, not by seat (up to 10 seats on Starter and Growth). Starter is $29 for 100 billable conversations and Growth runs from $59 for 250 up to $349 for 2,000. Its AI agent, Lyro, is a separate add-on, from $39 for 50 conversations to $700 for 1,000. A third meter, Flows (visual chatbot automation), costs nothing for 100 visitors a month and starts at $29 for 2,000.
For our teams we had to assume human volume, since Tidio's base price depends on it: 100, 400 and 1,000 human-handled conversations. Team A is Starter $29 plus 100 Lyro conversations at $75, so $104. Team B is Growth at 400 conversations, $89, plus 500 Lyro at $350, so $439. Team C is Growth at 1,000 conversations, $179, plus Lyro. The Lyro price list tops out at 1,000 conversations for $700; at that same rate, 1,500 would come to about $1,050, which is our estimate and not a published price, giving roughly $1,230.
Lyro counts any conversation where it sends at least one reply, even if a person finishes it. Strong for small Shopify and WordPress stores that want cheap chat and Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp on every plan. It gets expensive once AI volume grows. We take this apart in Tidio alternatives.
Freshdesk and Freshchat: cheap seats, cheap-looking AI that adds up
Freshworks has three overlapping products. Freshchat is chat, Freshdesk is email-first ticketing, and Freshdesk Omni combines them. Per-agent prices on annual billing are $19 for Freshchat Growth, $19 for Freshdesk Growth and $29 for Omni Growth. Monthly prices weren't visible on the pages, so every Freshworks figure here is annual.
The Freddy AI Agent includes 500 sessions once per account, then $49 per 100 ($0.49 each). A session is everything in a 24-hour window, not a resolution, so you pay for AI conversations that still reach a person. Steady-state, after the free 500 are used up: Team A is 2 × $19 plus $49 = $87. Team B is 5 × $19 plus 500 sessions at $245 = $340. Team C is 10 × $19 plus 1,500 sessions at $735 = $925.
Freshchat also has a free plan for up to 10 agents with chat, inbox and email, though the AI agent starts on Growth. Reviewers on Capterra flag bugs, weak email handling and cost climbing as you move up tiers. It suits cost-conscious teams that want a full ticketing suite or the broadest cheap channel list. It carries a long compliance list (SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001).
Chatwoot: among the lowest seat prices, if you can run it
Chatwoot is open source. Cloud plans run per agent monthly: $19 on Startups, $39 on Business, $99 on Enterprise. The free Hacker plan covers 2 agents and live chat only. Captain, its AI, comes with 300 credits a month on Startups and 500 on Business, then $20 per 1,000 extra.
We left the AI cell blank in the table on purpose: Chatwoot doesn't say how many credits one reply or one resolution uses, so we can't turn credits into a per-conversation price without guessing. Seats alone are $38, $95 and $190 for our three teams on Startups.
Self-hosting the Community Edition is free but has no Captain AI, and it needs real server and Docker skills. Chatwoot suits technical teams that want data control and a very cheap inbox. Reviewers describe its automation as mostly rule-based.
LiveChat: polished, per-seat, with AI sold in packs
LiveChat runs $25 per user monthly on Essential ($19 annual) and $99 on Growth ($79). Essential includes only 10 AI resolutions a month, Growth 200. Extra ones come in packs of 50 for $49.50, about $0.99 each. Past the included allowance, Essential is cheaper for every team here: Team A is 2 × $25 plus two packs, $149. Team B is 5 × $25 plus ten packs, $620. Team C is 10 × $25 plus thirty packs, $1,735. We assume packs can be bought on Essential; the pricing page didn't fully render its extra-cost FAQ.
It's for sales-led and Shopify teams that want a good chat console. It has SOC 2 Type 2, and SSO and audit logs only on Enterprise. At this price it's roughly Intercom with a slightly lower bill, not a different cost shape.
Zendesk: priced for scale, and the bill shows it
Zendesk's Suite Team is $69 per agent monthly ($55 annual) and is the cheapest plan with live chat and AI agents. Each agent brings 5 AI resolutions a month; the rest cost $2.00 pay-as-you-go or $1.50 committed (100 or more). Only an LLM-verified resolution is billable.
Team A: 2 × $69 plus 90 extra × $2.00 = $318. Team B: $345 seats plus 475 extra, $950 at $2.00 or $713 at $1.50, so $1,058 to $1,295. Team C: $690 seats plus 1,450 extra, $2,175 to $2,900, so $2,865 to $3,590.
It's the right tool for large ticket volumes, many brands, HIPAA with the compliance add-on, and data residency in the US, EEA, UK and APAC. For small teams it's overbuilt, and Copilot at $50 per agent is a separate add-on.
Front, HubSpot Service Hub and Gorgias: only if the shape fits
Front is an email-first shared inbox. Starter is $25 per seat on annual billing, capped at 10 seats and one channel type (email, Front Chat or SMS). Professional is $65 and adds omnichannel. Its AI agent, Autopilot, is listed as "starting at $0.05 per conversation," which is a floor, not a quote, so the table shows seats only: $50, $125 and $250. Choose it for B2B teams that run support and account management from shared email.
HubSpot Service Hub is best if you already run HubSpot CRM. The free tier covers 2 users with live chat and limited bots. Paid seats are priced per seat, and Professional requires a $1,500 one-time onboarding fee. The Starter price shows both $7 and $20 without saying which applies to which billing option, and the per-resolution AI rate comes from third-party sources only (about $0.50), so we won't print a total. Get a quote.
Gorgias is for Shopify-first stores, and it prices by tickets, not seats. Every AI interaction also counts as a ticket. We assumed 200, 1,000 and 2,500 human tickets in addition to the AI conversations. Team A fits Basic at $60 (300 tickets) plus $63 to $90 for AI. Team B fits Pro at $360 (2,000 tickets, 190 AI interactions included) plus $279 to $450. Team C fits Advanced at $900 (5,000 tickets) plus $824 to $1,350. Gorgias's pricing page shows two sets of prices, so confirm what the live cards say. Its draw is order actions: refund, cancel, discount from the inbox.
What switching costs, and what to try first
Before you move anything, check Intercom's Early Stage program. The pricing page advertises startups 93% off plus a year of Fin free. We haven't been able to read the eligibility rules, so check its terms. If you qualify, you may not need to leave.
Moving help content is usually the dull part. Talvo can import your help center by crawl or directly from Intercom, Zendesk, Help Scout, Crisp, Freshdesk and others; contacts come over as CSV. Other vendors have their own importers, so ask before you commit.

Drift, for completeness, isn't an option: Salesloft is retiring it and pointing customers to another product.
Which one fits which team
If price is everything and you can live without SOC 2, Crisp or Chatwoot. If your support is email and you want the most humane inbox, Help Scout. If you're a small Shopify store, Tidio for starter volume or Gorgias when order actions matter. If you need compliance and scale, Zendesk or staying on Intercom. If you want flat pricing with an AI agent that cites its sources and your team is comfortable without WhatsApp or SOC 2 yet, Talvo. For the longer cost argument, see per-seat vs flat pricing and AI resolution pricing compared, and our Intercom pricing breakdown. For the head-to-head, Talvo vs Intercom. On the corporate news, see Intercom is now Fin, and Salesforce has bought it.
Which should you choose?
- you want the AI cost to be a flat plan allowance plus $0.49 per extra resolution instead of $0.99 on every one
- you don't want your bill to grow every time you add a teammate
- you can live without WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram, SOC 2 and SSO for now, and chat plus email plus a help center covers your support
- you want an AI agent that answers only from your published articles, cites them and hands off with the conversation intact
- you need compliance such as SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA support, SSO or data hosted in the EU or Australia
- you rely on WhatsApp, SMS, phone or Instagram and want them in the same inbox as chat
- your team uses product tours, checklists or in-app messaging and an app ecosystem that Intercom's platform page puts at 450+ apps
- you qualify for the Early Stage startup program, which makes the price gap much smaller
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest alternative to Intercom?
Crisp is likely the cheapest, though its AI overage rate isn't published and our totals are estimates: Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats and Essentials is $95 for 10, with AI credits included. Talvo ($49 to $299 for the teams we priced) and Freshchat are next. Chatwoot has among the lowest seat prices but doesn't publish how many credits an AI reply uses.
Is there a free Intercom alternative?
Yes, with limits. Crisp's free plan covers 2 seats but no AI, Tidio's free plan has 50 billable conversations, Help Scout's covers 5 users, Freshchat's covers up to 10 agents, and Talvo's free plan covers 2 teammates with 25 AI resolutions a month during the beta. Intercom has no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Is Intercom too expensive for startups?
It can be. At list prices a 5-person team answering 500 conversations with AI pays about $690 a month on monthly billing, and most of that is the $0.99 per outcome AI fee. Intercom's Early Stage program advertises 93% off plus a year of Fin free, so check whether you qualify before you move.
Can I keep my help articles if I switch?
Usually. Talvo can crawl your public help center or import articles from Intercom, Zendesk, Help Scout, Crisp, Freshdesk and others, and contacts come over by CSV. Check the importer of whichever tool you choose before you cancel.
Which Intercom alternative has the cheapest AI per resolution?
Among resolution-billed tools, Talvo's $0.49 overage is lowest, then Help Scout at $0.75, then Intercom and LiveChat at about $0.99 and Zendesk at $1.50 to $2.00. Crisp bills AI usage at an estimated $0.05 to $0.10 per conversation, and each tool defines a resolution differently. Freshworks' Freddy is also $0.49, but per session rather than per resolution.
Which alternative is best for ecommerce?
Gorgias is built for Shopify stores, with order actions like refunds and cancellations inside the inbox, but it prices by tickets and each AI interaction also counts as a ticket. Tidio is cheaper to start for small stores. Talvo has no native Shopify integration today.
Does Drift still exist as an Intercom alternative?
No. Drift is being retired by Salesloft, and its site now points to a different product, so we don't list it as a buyable option.
