Put five people on each and let AI answer 300 conversations a month, and Help Scout's Standard plan comes to $350 on annual billing ($375 monthly). Intercom (now Fin) on its cheapest plan comes to $442 ($492 monthly), and $722 on the Advanced plan, which is where workflows start. At five seats, Help Scout vs Intercom looks like about a $100 argument.
It isn't. The bigger gap is what each company counts as a billable AI answer, and what each product was built to do. This post prices both for 3, 5 and 10 people with the arithmetic shown, lines up the AI definitions word for word, compares email-first with messenger-first, and says who should pick which. Talvo, our product, gets one section near the end, with a cost calculator after it. All prices are list prices from each vendor's own pages, checked October 21, 2026.
The short answer
Pick Help Scout if your support lives in an inbox, you want per-user pricing you can predict, and you'd like AI that doesn't charge when a customer pushes back. Pick Intercom if your customers talk to you from inside a product, you want the most capable messenger and proactive messaging, or compliance (HIPAA, SSO, a choice of hosting region) is on your checklist and the budget exists.
What changed in 2026
Two things. Intercom renamed itself Fin in May, keeping "Intercom" as the name of the helpdesk product, and Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin (formerly Intercom) on September 10, 2026. Per Salesforce's announcement, Fin will continue to serve its customers. Intercom's pricing page still shows the same structure on October 21: per-seat helpdesk plans plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome. We found no announced pricing change tied to the deal, but read your renewal terms. Our Fin and Salesforce explainer covers what customers should do.
On Help Scout's side the AI agent is now sold as Envoy on the pricing page. The pricing FAQ still calls it AI Answers, and its docs call the agent Scout. Same product, three names.
Email-first or messenger-first?
Help Scout was built around a shared inbox that feels like mail. Customers email you or use Beacon, a widget that offers live chat and article suggestions, and your team works in a familiar thread view. Intercom was built around the Messenger, a chat window inside your site or product, with the inbox and ticketing behind it. Most of the other differences follow from that.
- Do most customers reach you by email, or from inside your site or product?
- Does your team want an inbox that feels like email, or a live chat console?
- Do you need product tours, checklists or in-app announcements, or just a chat widget and a help center?
- Is a signed BAA, SSO or a choice of hosting region required?
- Would you rather pay a flat rate per person, or per person plus a meter on AI and channels?
| Help Scout | Intercom | |
|---|---|---|
| Built around | Shared email inbox, with the Beacon widget for chat and article suggestions | The Messenger in your site or product, with inbox and ticketing behind it |
| Live chat | Beacon, from the Standard plan (Free has a contact form only) | Messenger on every plan, free and unlimited |
| In-app messaging | Messages (targeted in-app and website messages) from Standard; we found no product tours | In-app chats, banners and tooltips on every plan |
| Tours, surveys, checklists, push | Surveys, CSAT and NPS from Standard; no tours found | Product tours, surveys, checklists, posts, mobile push and the Series builder come with Proactive Support Plus, $99 a month including 500 messages |
| Outbound campaigns | None found on the pricing page | Email campaigns billed as usage; Series in Proactive Support Plus |
Channels
| Channel | Help Scout | Intercom |
|---|---|---|
| Every plan | Every plan | |
| Live chat | Standard and up | Every plan |
| SMS | Included from Plus; "via integration" on Standard | Pay-as-you-go, per message |
| WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger | Standard and up | WhatsApp pay-as-you-go per conversation; Instagram and Messenger supported |
| Phone | Through an integration such as Aircall | Usage-based; the rate isn't on the pricing page |
Help Scout's own page contradicts itself on SMS: the Standard plan card says "live chat and SMS" while the comparison table says "via integration." Check with them if SMS matters. On Intercom's side, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and email campaigns are billed as extra usage on top of seats, which is how a bill drifts above the seat math.
Help Scout vs Intercom pricing for the same team
Plan prices first, per seat or user per month.
| Help Scout | Intercom | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0: 5 users, 100 contacts a month, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site | None; 14-day trial with every feature |
| Entry | Standard: $25 annual, $30 monthly (up to 25 users) | Essential: $29 annual, $39 monthly |
| Middle | Plus: $45 annual, $54 monthly (up to 50 users) | Advanced: $85 annual, $99 monthly, with 20 free Lite seats |
| Top | Pro: $75 annual, $90 monthly (minimum 10 users) | Expert: $132 annual, $139 monthly, with 50 free Lite seats |
| AI agent | Envoy, $0.75 per resolution | Fin, $0.99 per outcome |
New Intercom customers are currently shown lower promotional Essential prices ($19 annual, $29 monthly). The page doesn't say how long they last, so every figure here uses list prices. Lite seats on Intercom are free but can't send messages; every team needs at least one full seat. Help Scout bills every user including the account owner, and its light users are free up to a plan allowance.
Now the bills. Same rule for both vendors: every AI answer counted as a billable resolution, which is a ceiling. We use 300 AI answers a month at the entry plans, the cheapest plan on each side that includes live chat.
| Team, 300 AI answers | Help Scout Standard (annual / monthly) | Intercom Essential (annual / monthly) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 people | 3 × $25 = $75, plus 300 × $0.75 = $225: $300 / 3 × $30 = $90 + $225: $315 | 3 × $29 = $87, plus 300 × $0.99 = $297: $384 / 3 × $39 = $117 + $297: $414 |
| 5 people | 5 × $25 = $125 + $225: $350 / 5 × $30 = $150 + $225: $375 | 5 × $29 = $145 + $297: $442 / 5 × $39 = $195 + $297: $492 |
| 10 people | 10 × $25 = $250 + $225: $475 / 10 × $30 = $300 + $225: $525 | 10 × $29 = $290 + $297: $587 / 10 × $39 = $390 + $297: $687 |
Teams that want workflows, round-robin routing and private help centers need the middle tier on each side. Help Scout's Plus plan, with its 500 advanced workflows and AI Drafts and AI Summarize included, against Intercom's Advanced plan:
| Team, 300 AI answers | Help Scout Plus (annual / monthly) | Intercom Advanced (annual / monthly) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 people | 3 × $45 = $135 + $225: $360 / 3 × $54 = $162 + $225: $387 | 3 × $85 = $255 + $297: $552 / 3 × $99 = $297 + $297: $594 |
| 5 people | 5 × $45 = $225 + $225: $450 / 5 × $54 = $270 + $225: $495 | 5 × $85 = $425 + $297: $722 / 5 × $99 = $495 + $297: $792 |
| 10 people | 10 × $45 = $450 + $225: $675 / 10 × $54 = $540 + $225: $765 | 10 × $85 = $850 + $297: $1,147 / 10 × $99 = $990 + $297: $1,287 |
And what happens as AI volume grows. Entry plans, annual billing, with 5 people at 1,000 AI answers and 10 people at 3,000:
| Team | Help Scout Standard | Intercom Essential |
|---|---|---|
| 5 people, 1,000 AI answers | $125 + 1,000 × $0.75 = $875 (monthly billing: $900) | $145 + 1,000 × $0.99 = $1,135 (monthly billing: $1,185) |
| 10 people, 3,000 AI answers | $250 + 3,000 × $0.75 = $2,500 (monthly billing: $2,550) | $290 + 3,000 × $0.99 = $3,260 (monthly billing: $3,360) |
At those volumes the AI line is most of the bill on both sides, and the seat math barely matters. That's why the definition below deserves more of your attention than the per-seat price.
What the seat price leaves out
Both vendors have extras that don't appear in the tables. On Help Scout, an extra inbox is $10 a month on annual billing ($12 monthly), an extra Docs site $20 ($24), and an extra light user $10 ($12). Standard stops at 25 users, the 26th forcing Plus, and Pro has a 10-user minimum. SSO is an add-on on Standard and Plus, HIPAA is an add-on on Plus (not offered on Standard), and both are included on Pro.
On Intercom, Copilot (its agent-side assistant) is $29 per agent on annual billing, $35 monthly, with 10 free uses per agent a month. Help Scout includes AI Assist on Standard and AI Drafts and AI Summarize on Plus without a separate charge. Add the $99 Proactive Support Plus if you want tours, and per-use charges for WhatsApp, SMS and phone. A five-person team that adds Copilot to Essential (5 × $29 = $145 annual) has doubled its seat bill.
Trials are not alike. Help Scout gives 15 days on Standard or Plus with no card, and new accounts get three months of free, unlimited AI resolutions. Existing Help Scout customers don't get the AI trial. Intercom's 14-day trial includes every feature and Fin. On discounts, Intercom's Early Stage program is described on its pricing page as 93% off plus a year of Fin free; Help Scout offers nonprofits 10% and, through Help Scout for Good, up to 100% for qualifying organizations.
What counts as a billable AI answer
Both bill per resolution-like event. Here are the two definitions as each vendor states them.
| Help Scout (Envoy) | Intercom (Fin) | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | A single AI chat session resolved without help from a human | An "outcome," charged once per conversation |
| Billable when | Scout gives a response and the customer doesn't ask for additional help after the last AI response | The customer confirms the issue is resolved, or doesn't ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow (Procedure), including handoffs |
| Not billable | Escalation, further searching of the knowledge base, a request for more help, or the "I still need help" button; a greeting or follow-up question alone | A conversation where the customer asks for more help after Fin responds, unless a Procedure completes |
| Price | $0.75 | $0.99 |
| Spending control | Monthly cap by number of resolutions; the AI turns off in your Beacon at the cap | We found no cap described on the pricing page |
| Billing timing | In arrears; on annual plans it's deducted from the prepaid credit | Usage on top of the seat fee |
Read it closely and the two agree more than they differ. As we read the wording, both charge for a quiet customer: if the AI answered and nobody came back for more help, that's billable on either side. Where they split is the handoff. Fin counts a completed Procedure as an outcome even when it ends by routing to a human, and Help Scout voids the charge if the customer escalates. How much that matters depends on whether you build Procedures.
An illustration (invented numbers, to show the mechanism). The AI replies to 100 conversations: 70 customers get an answer and go quiet, 10 run a Procedure that ends by routing to a person, and 20 ask for a human. Fin bills 80 outcomes, 80 × $0.99 = $79.20. Help Scout bills the 70 answered sessions, 70 × $0.75 = $52.50. Of the $26.70 gap, $16.80 is the lower rate (70 × $0.24) and $9.90 is the definition (10 × $0.99). Same traffic, two bills.
Both companies publish resolution rates: Fin's company-reported average is 76%, and Help Scout's own calculator cites about 73%. They come from different definitions and different customer mixes, so don't read them against each other. Run your own conversations through both during the trials.
- Pull 50 real conversationsTake last month's genuine customer questions, including the awkward ones, not a clean demo set.
- Load the same articles into bothImport your help center into both tools so each AI works from identical material. Help Scout's trial runs 15 days; Intercom's runs 14.
- Score the answersMark each as correct, wrong or incomplete. A fluent wrong answer is worse than a handoff.
- Apply each billing rule to the transcriptsCount what each vendor would have charged using its own definition, as in the illustration above.
- Price the headcount you'll have in a yearCheck the caps: 25 users on Help Scout Standard, the 10-user minimum on Pro, and the free Lite seats on Intercom Advanced.
Help center, workflow, reporting and security
| Help Scout | Intercom | |
|---|---|---|
| Help center | Docs: 2 sites on Standard, 3 on Plus, 5 on Pro; restricted sites from Plus | Public help center on Essential; private and multilingual from Advanced |
| Workflows | 150 basic on Standard, 500 advanced on Plus, unlimited on Pro | Workflow builder from Advanced |
| Routing | Round robin from Plus | Round-robin assignment from Advanced |
| SLAs | 1 basic on Standard, 2 on Plus, unlimited on Pro | Expert plan |
| Reporting | 2-year history on Standard; all-time from Plus | Pre-built reports on Essential |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type 2; HIPAA on Pro (add-on on Plus); SSO and SAML on Pro (add-on on Standard and Plus) | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27018, 27701 and 42001; HIPAA support and SSO on Expert |
| Hosting | AWS; region not stated | US, EU or Australia |
For a team whose security review requires a data-region choice, Intercom is the only one of the two that publishes one. For one that requires SSO but not a high-end plan, Help Scout's Pro plan at $75 per user on annual billing is the cheaper way to get it than Intercom Expert at $132, though Pro carries a 10-user minimum.
Who should pick which
Help Scout fits the team that sees support as correspondence. A founder and four colleagues answering email, a handful of live chats, a help center that matters more than a clever bot. It rewards you for being predictable: the seat price is honest, the AI is $0.75, and you can cap it. It's less suited to product-led SaaS teams that want tours and in-product announcements, or anyone who needs phone and SMS as first-class channels.
- Per-user pricing that is easy to forecast, with a spending cap on AI
- AI charge is voided when the customer escalates or asks for more help
- AI Assist, AI Drafts and AI Summarize included without extra fees
- SOC 2 Type 2; HIPAA with a BAA on Pro
- User caps force plan jumps (25 on Standard, 50 on Plus)
- No product tours or outbound campaigns found; phone only via integration
- Region of hosting isn't stated
Intercom fits the team that treats support as part of the product. A SaaS company with signed-in users, a growing help center, someone who writes in-app announcements, and a budget where $0.99 an outcome is a rounding error against engineering time. The Messenger is the most polished in the category, and reviewers praise Fin's answer quality. The honest catches are the bill's shape (seats, outcomes, channel usage, add-ons) and that the cheap plan is a gateway: workflows, private help centers and SLAs sit on the higher plans. Our Intercom pricing breakdown and is Intercom worth it go deeper.
- Messenger and in-product messaging are the strongest in this comparison
- SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and SSO on Expert; hosting in the US, EU or Australia
- Free Lite seats on Advanced (20) and Expert (50)
- Seats plus $0.99 per outcome plus usage-billed channels is hard to forecast
- Fin bills Procedures that end in a handoff and customers who just stop replying
- No free plan; tours and surveys are a separate $99-a-month add-on
One more rule for the decision: seat count growth. Help Scout's per-user price rises linearly until the 26th user, and Intercom's rises linearly with a higher slope but gives you free Lite seats for people who only read. If you add a lot of occasional viewers (finance, engineering), Intercom's Lite seats narrow the gap.
A third option if you want chat-first with a flat price
If seat fees and $0.75 to $0.99 per AI answer are the reasons you're comparing, there's a third shape: pay per workspace. Talvo is ours, so judge this section with that in mind. On Talvo's pricing page, Starter is $49 a month for 5 teammates and 100 AI resolutions, Growth $149 for 15 and 500, Scale $299 for 25 and 2,000, with $0.49 per resolution past the allowance. Adding a teammate within a plan's limit never changes the bill.
For the same teams as above: 3 or 5 people at 300 AI resolutions is $147 a month, or $119 on annual billing (the Growth plan, with 500 included, is cheaper than Starter plus overage on annual). Ten people at 300 is $149 monthly, $119 annual. At 1,000 resolutions for five people, the Scale plan is $299 a month or $249 annual, against Help Scout's $875 to $900 and Intercom's $1,135 to $1,185. A resolution means an answered conversation with no teammate message, and a handoff is never billed.

The trade-offs are real. Talvo launched in 2026 and is in beta, with no review-site ratings or case studies. It has no SOC 2 report, SAML SSO or HIPAA support, and no data-region choice. There's no WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Messenger channel and no phone, no product tours or checklists, and no native app store app. It is not email-first the way Help Scout is: it has two-way email into a shared inbox, but the product centers on the chat widget. Integrations are a REST API, webhooks and Slack.

Estimates from each vendor's published list prices, checked October 21, 2026. Assumes the cheapest plan that includes live chat and an AI agent, and that every AI-resolved conversation is billable. Excludes taxes, promotions, add-ons (such as agent copilots) and per-use channels like SMS or WhatsApp. Talvo's annual price includes extra resolutions at the same $0.49, billed once a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is Help Scout cheaper than Intercom?
At every team size we priced, yes. With 300 AI answers a month, Help Scout Standard comes to $300, $350 and $475 on annual billing for 3, 5 and 10 people, against $384, $442 and $587 on Intercom Essential. That is roughly a fifth to a quarter less. The gap grows on the middle plans, where Help Scout Plus is 35% to 41% cheaper than Intercom Advanced.
Does Help Scout have live chat?
Yes. Live chat runs through Beacon, Help Scout's widget, from the Standard plan up. The Free plan has only a contact form in Beacon. Help Scout is built email-first, so chat is a feature of the inbox rather than the center of the product, as Intercom's Messenger is.
Help Scout Envoy (AI Answers) vs Fin: which is better?
We have no independent accuracy comparison, and each company's published resolution rate (about 73% for Help Scout, 76% for Fin) rests on its own definition, so they aren't comparable. What we can compare is billing: Envoy is $0.75 per resolution and voids the charge when the customer escalates or asks for more help, while Fin is $0.99 per outcome and also bills a Procedure that ends in a handoff. Run your own conversations through both trials.
Can Help Scout do in-app messaging or product tours?
Help Scout offers Messages, targeted in-app and website messages, from the Standard plan, plus surveys, CSAT and NPS. We found no product tours on its pricing page. On Intercom, in-app chats, banners and tooltips are on every plan, while tours, checklists, surveys and push messages come with the Proactive Support Plus add-on at $99 a month including 500 messages.
Does Help Scout support phone calls?
Only through an integration. Help Scout's pricing lists phone as available via a third-party tool such as Aircall on every plan, with preferred pricing on Pro. Intercom has a native phone channel, but it is billed as usage and the rate isn't published on its pricing page.
Does the Salesforce acquisition change Intercom pricing?
Not that we could find. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin (formerly Intercom) on September 10, 2026, and said Fin will continue to serve its customers. Intercom's pricing page on October 21 still shows per-seat helpdesk plans plus $0.99 per Fin outcome, so read your renewal terms rather than assuming either way.
Can Fin work with Help Scout?
Probably not. Intercom sells Fin on top of some other helpdesks, naming Salesforce and Zendesk on its pricing page, but its own Intercom-versus-Help-Scout comparison says Help Scout is not a supported Fin integration. Confirm with Intercom before planning around it, since integration lists change.
Which is better for a small business, Help Scout or Intercom?
Help Scout for most small teams whose support arrives by email: it is cheaper at every size we priced, its AI can be capped, and its per-user price is easy to forecast. Intercom suits product-led SaaS teams that want in-product messaging and the strongest Messenger, and can absorb seats plus $0.99 per AI outcome.
