Help Scout bills by the user, so its price moves every time you hire. Put ten people on Help Scout's Standard plan, add 300 AI resolutions at $0.75 each, and the list price is $475 a month on annual billing. The same ten people on Talvo come to $119. That gap is what drives most searches for a Help Scout alternative, and it's real (our Help Scout alternatives roundup prices the other options for the same teams). It is also the least interesting part of this comparison, because Help Scout is a very good email tool and Talvo is a chat-first one. Which of those you are matters more than the dollars.
Talvo makes a competing product, so here is how we kept this fair. Every Help Scout number comes from Help Scout's pricing page and documentation, checked on October 21, 2026, with the arithmetic shown. Every Talvo claim comes from our own product and pricing. There is a section on where Help Scout wins, and it's long on purpose. For Help Scout's plans on their own, see Help Scout pricing explained.
Who should stay on Help Scout
If most of your conversations arrive by email, stay. Help Scout was built around a shared mailbox that feels like email. Its multiple inboxes, mature workflows, Docs sites and compliance record are the product's center of gravity. If you need HIPAA, SOC 2 Type 2 or SAML single sign-on, none of what follows changes that, because Talvo has none of them.
Look at Talvo if the center of your support has moved to the website widget and to AI answers drawn from your help articles, and a bill that grows with every teammate has started to bother you. That's a narrower group than "everyone", and we'd rather say so now.
A Help Scout alternative, priced: the same team at four sizes
Help Scout charges per user per month. Here are the plans, as listed in October 2026.
| Plan | Annual, per user | Monthly, per user | Users | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | up to 5 | 1 inbox, 1 Docs site, 100 contacts a month, no live chat |
| Standard | $25 | $30 | up to 25 | Live chat (Beacon), 2 inboxes, 2 Docs sites, basic workflows, 1 basic SLA policy |
| Plus | $45 | $54 | up to 50 | Round robin routing, advanced workflows, 2 advanced SLA policies, AI Drafts, customer portal |
| Pro | $75 | $90 | unlimited, 10-user minimum | SSO and HIPAA included, unlimited SLA policies |
Annual billing saves 16%. An extra inbox is $10 a month ($12 monthly) and an extra Docs site is $20 ($24 monthly). The AI agent is billed separately, at $0.75 for each resolution, and its pricing-page name is Envoy, though Help Scout's FAQ calls it AI Answers and its documentation calls it Scout.
Talvo charges per workspace: Starter is $49 a month for 5 teammates and 100 AI resolutions, the Growth plan is $149 for 15 and 500, and Scale is $299 for 25 and 2,000, with extras at $0.49 each. Annual billing makes those $39, $119 and $249. Adding teammates up to the limit never changes the bill.
Now the same team on each, with list prices and the cheapest Talvo plan that fits. Help Scout is priced on Standard, since that's the cheapest plan with live chat.
| Team | Help Scout Standard, annual | Help Scout Standard, monthly | Talvo, annual | Talvo, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 users, 100 AI resolutions | 3 × $25 + 100 × $0.75 = $150 | 3 × $30 + $75 = $165 | Starter, $39 | Starter, $49 |
| 5 users, 300 AI resolutions | 5 × $25 + 300 × $0.75 = $350 | 5 × $30 + $225 = $375 | Growth, $119 | Starter $49 + 200 × $0.49, $147 |
| 10 users, 300 AI resolutions | 10 × $25 + $225 = $475 | 10 × $30 + $225 = $525 | Growth, $119 | Growth, $149 |
| 25 users, 1,000 AI resolutions | 25 × $25 + 1,000 × $0.75 = $1,375 | 25 × $30 + $750 = $1,500 | Scale, $249 | Scale, $299 |
Three notes on how to read it. First, the cheapest Talvo plan changes with billing. For the 5-user team, annual billing makes Growth ($119, with 500 resolutions included) cheaper than Starter's $39 plus $98 of overage. Second, the comparison isn't feature for feature. Help Scout's Standard plan includes basic workflows and one SLA policy. On Talvo those arrive with the Growth plan at $149 a month, so a small team that needs them pays $149 monthly where the table shows $147, which is nearly the same. Third, if you want to compare at Plus level, with round robin routing, advanced workflows and AI Drafts, 5 users cost $450 a month annual or $495 monthly on Help Scout, against $119 or $149 on Talvo's Growth plan, which has routing rules, SLA policies and workflows.
Help Scout's AI is free for the first three months of a new account. In months one to three, the 5-user team pays only seats, $125 on annual billing, which is close to Talvo's $119. In month four the $225 AI line starts. Existing Help Scout customers don't get the trial.
Both products also have cliffs. On Help Scout, the 26th user forces Standard to Plus, and Pro has a 10-user minimum, which means $750 a month on annual billing before you've answered anyone. On Talvo, the sixth teammate forces Talvo's Starter plan up to Growth, and the sixteenth forces Growth up to Scale.
What a hiring plan does to each bill
Per-user pricing is easiest to see when you add people. Take the 5-user team with 300 AI resolutions and hire three more. On Help Scout Standard, the annual bill goes from $350 to $425 (8 × $25 + $225), or from $375 to $465 monthly (8 × $30 + $225). That's $75 to $90 a month for three people, every month, whether or not the extra conversations ever arrive. On Talvo, the annual bill stays at $119, because the Growth plan already covered the first five and holds 15. Monthly billing is the only place it moves: the team outgrows Starter at the sixth person, so $147 becomes $149, a $2 difference.
None of that makes per-seat pricing wrong. If every teammate answers a lot of email and the work scales with headcount, a price that scales with headcount is fair. It stings when the extra people are part-timers, or when the AI is doing the growth.

Estimates from each vendor's published list prices, checked October 21, 2026. Assumes the cheapest plan that includes live chat and an AI agent, and that every AI-resolved conversation is billable. Excludes taxes, promotions, add-ons (such as agent copilots) and per-use channels like SMS or WhatsApp. Talvo's annual price includes extra resolutions at the same $0.49, billed once a year.
What counts as an AI resolution on each side
The rates are $0.75 against $0.49. The definitions are where it gets interesting, because Help Scout's is narrower, and that favors the buyer.
| Help Scout (Envoy) | Talvo | |
|---|---|---|
| Billed when | An AI chat session ends resolved without human help, and the customer doesn't ask for more after the last AI response | The AI answered end to end from a published article and no teammate sent a message |
| Voided by | Escalating, searching the knowledge base again, asking for more help, or clicking "I still need help" | A teammate replying. A hand-off to a person is never billed |
| Counted | Once per session | Once per conversation |
| Allowance | None. Free for the first 3 months on new accounts | 100, 500 or 2,000 a month by plan; 25 on Free during the beta |
| Spending cap | Yes, a monthly limit. At the cap the AI switches off until next cycle | None. Talvo has no spending-cap setting; the only control is turning AI off for the workspace. Usage and overage show in Settings, then Billing |
Help Scout may well bill fewer resolutions than Talvo would count for the same real outcomes, because more things void the charge. We have no data on how much fewer, so we aren't going to guess. Here is the arithmetic that frames it. For Help Scout's per-resolution price to come down to Talvo's $0.49, it would have to bill about 65% of the conversations Talvo counts (0.49 divided by 0.75). And that's only the per-unit rate. On Talvo the first 100 to 2,000 resolutions are inside the plan, and Help Scout includes none.
Help Scout bills AI resolutions in arrears. On an annual plan those charges draw down your prepaid credit, so the docs say the credit will be used up in less than a year. Plan for that if you pay annually. Our broader AI resolution pricing comparison puts every vendor's definition side by side.
Email: Help Scout's home turf
Help Scout's inbox is built for email, and the details show. Standard includes two inboxes, Plus five and Pro ten, with more available for $10 or $12 each. Saved replies, workflows (150 basic on Standard, 500 advanced on Plus), round robin routing on Plus, a customer portal, and reporting that reaches back two years on Standard and all-time on Plus. Reviewers, mostly through competitor-written roundups, praise how clean and email-like it feels.
Talvo handles email too, and handles it as one channel among others rather than the main event. You forward your support address into Talvo (setup), and customers' emails become conversations on the same contact record as their chats. Your replies go out as email and thread back onto the original conversation. One limit to know: replies are sent from Talvo's sending address with your workspace's name rather than from your own domain, and they don't appear in your Gmail Sent folder. Attachments do work, in both directions. An email conversation can be assigned, prioritized, tagged and snoozed, counts toward SLA policies on the Growth plan, and gets the same AI brief, drafted reply and one-click translate as a chat.

What Talvo doesn't have is Help Scout's depth. There is one shared inbox per workspace, narrowed with saved views and routing rules on the Growth plan, and a separate workspace for each separate business. There's no customer-facing portal.

Live chat and AI answers on your website
On Help Scout's side, the chat widget is Beacon: live chat plus article suggestions from your Docs, with five Beacons on Standard and unlimited on Plus. Free gets only a contact form. Messages and surveys are there on Standard. The AI agent is a paid add-on, and the bundled AI tools are AI Assist (edit and translate) on Standard and AI Drafts and AI Summarize from Plus. Help Scout lists a Copilot product as coming soon.
Talvo is built around the chat widget and the AI agent. Its AI answers only from your published articles and shows which one it used, hands off to a person with the whole thread when it isn't sure, and replies in the customer's language. The Starter plan adds a copilot that drafts replies and summarizes threads, proactive campaigns in the messenger, NPS and custom surveys (the post-resolution CSAT rating is on every plan), and booking pages. Identity verification for signed-in users is on every plan. If you want the details on how the agent decides when to answer, read how AI auto-resolve works.

For documentation, Help Scout gives you two Docs sites on Standard, three on Plus and five on Pro, with restricted sites from Plus. Talvo gives you one hosted help center per workspace, on the Free plan, from the same articles the AI reads. There's no custom domain for it.

Where Help Scout wins
- SOC 2 Type 2, plus HIPAA with a signed BAA (a Plus add-on, included on Pro)
- SSO and SAML on Pro, available as an add-on on Standard and Plus
- 100+ integrations, with Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira and Linear on Plus
- Email, chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger channels, with SMS on Plus (via integration on Standard)
- Multiple inboxes and Docs sites, and restricted Docs on Plus and up
- A Free plan with 5 users, a monthly AI spending cap and a 30-day money-back guarantee
- A long review record: about 4.4 on G2 and 4.6 on Capterra, per secondary sources
- Price grows with every user, with caps of 25 on Standard and 50 on Plus
- Pro has a 10-user minimum
- AI is $0.75 a resolution with no included allowance after the trial
- Voice calling only through an integration
Be clear about what this list means if you're regulated. Healthcare teams, and anyone whose buyers send security questionnaires, should stay on Help Scout or choose another tool with compliance in place. Talvo has no SOC 2 report, no HIPAA support, no SAML SSO and no choice of data region. We do the basics properly (HTTPS, tenant isolation, hashed API keys, signed webhooks, a public subprocessor list on our security page). That isn't an audit.
The rest of Talvo's gap list: no WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram, Messenger or phone channels (the first four are on the roadmap, not shipped). No Zapier connection, and integrations are a REST API, webhooks and Slack. A Free plan with 2 teammates. No customer portal. No product tours. Mobile means a browser, not an App Store app. And Talvo is new and in beta, with no reviews on G2 or Capterra. Help Scout's figures above come from competitor-authored roundups, so treat them as approximate.
Talvo's own edge, stated once: AI answers that cost less, a flat price that doesn't punish a growing team, chat and email and a help center in one product, and a free plan with the AI included during the beta. If those matter more to you than the compliance list, read on.
Moving from Help Scout to Talvo
The mechanical parts take under an hour. The content check takes longer.
- Import your DocsIn Talvo, open Knowledge, then Import, and paste the public address of your Help Scout Docs site (how it works). Restricted Docs sites can't be read, because Talvo sees only what a visitor would.
- Publish what's accurateEvery imported article arrives as a draft. The AI only answers from published articles, so review before you publish.
- Export your contactsUpload a CSV with name, email, company and phone to the Contacts page. People are matched by email, so nothing duplicates.
- Swap the widgetPaste Talvo's one script tag before the closing body tag, then remove Beacon (install guide).
- Point your support emailForward your support address to the one in Settings, then Inbox, then Email forwarding.
- Run both for two weeksKeep Help Scout live for email while Talvo covers a slice of your site, and watch which questions the AI hands off.
What doesn't come across is your conversation history. Talvo doesn't import past conversations, so export what you need from Help Scout first. Saved replies, workflows and SLA policies have to be rebuilt by hand in Talvo's canned responses, workflows and SLA settings.
- Check your renewal date. Annual card payments renew automatically by default, and Help Scout's terms ask for 30 days' notice of non-renewal.
- Don't assume a mid-term refund or downgrade. Its docs and terms of service disagree on reducing users during an annual term, so read the terms.
- Expect a last AI charge. Resolutions are billed in arrears.
- Export contacts and any conversations you need to keep.
- Note anything you rely on that Talvo lacks: restricted Docs, HIPAA, SSO, SMS or WhatsApp.
- List your saved replies and workflows so you can rebuild the ones that matter.
Help Scout also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee from the first payment, which makes the reverse trip easier for anyone testing it. If you're weighing Help Scout against a different incumbent, Help Scout vs Intercom covers that matchup, and best live chat software for small business lists the chat-first field.
Which should you choose?
- your support is moving to the website widget and AI answers, and email is one channel among several
- you don't want your bill to grow with every teammate or jump when you pass 25 users
- you want AI answers that cite your articles at $0.49 with an allowance included instead of $0.75 from the first one
- you want chat, email and a hosted help center in one product at a flat price
- you can accept being early on a beta product with no reviews yet
- most of your conversations are email and you want multiple inboxes and mature email workflows
- you need HIPAA, SOC 2 Type 2, SAML SSO or a vendor with a long compliance record
- you rely on SMS (on Plus, or via integration on Standard), WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger, restricted Docs sites or a customer portal
- your team is 5 or fewer and the Free plan covers you, or you are a solo user with little AI volume, where one $25 seat costs less than Talvo's Starter plan
- you want 100+ integrations and years of reviews behind the product
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Help Scout?
It depends on what you use it for. For email-first teams, an email-centric tool such as Front is closer; for chat-first teams that want AI answers on the website at a flat price, Talvo is one option. A team of 10 with 300 AI resolutions is about $475 a month on Help Scout Standard (annual) and $119 on Talvo's Growth plan, though Talvo is in beta and lacks SOC 2, HIPAA and SSO.
Is there a free Help Scout alternative?
Several tools have free plans. Talvo's Free plan includes 2 teammates, the chat widget, two-way email, a shared inbox and a hosted help center, with 25 AI resolutions a month during the beta. Crisp's Free plan has 2 seats and Tidio's has 50 conversations and 10 seats. Help Scout's own Free plan gives 5 users but is capped at 100 contacts a month and has no live chat.
Is Help Scout's AI included in the price?
No. Help Scout's AI agent, sold as Envoy, is $0.75 per resolution on top of the per-user price, with no included allowance. New accounts get 3 months of free unlimited AI resolutions, and existing customers get no trial. AI Assist for editing and translating is bundled, and AI Drafts and Summarize come with Plus.
How much does Help Scout cost for 10 users?
On the Standard plan, 10 users are $250 a month on annual billing or $300 monthly, since it is $25 or $30 per user. Add 300 AI resolutions at $0.75 ($225) and the total is $475 or $525. Plus is $45 or $54 per user, and Pro has a 10-user minimum at $75 or $90.
Does Help Scout have live chat?
Yes, on Standard and up. The Beacon widget combines live chat with article suggestions from your Docs site. The Free plan only gets a contact form in Beacon. Help Scout's chat is part of an email-first product, while Talvo's inbox, widget and AI agent are designed around chat as well as email.
Why do teams leave Help Scout?
Reviewers, mostly in competitor-written roundups, cite per-user pricing with caps of 25 on Standard and 50 on Plus, a 10-user minimum on Pro, thinner reporting and multichannel automation than enterprise suites, and AI billed per resolution. Teams that are mostly email and happy with the inbox tend to stay.
Is Help Scout worth it for a small team?
For a small email-first team, usually yes. The Free plan covers 5 users with limits, and Standard is $25 per user on annual billing with live chat and Docs included. For one person with almost no AI volume, that is cheaper than Talvo's Starter plan at $39. The cost grows with seats and AI resolutions, and compliance needs such as HIPAA or SSO push you to Plus or Pro.
Can I move my Help Scout Docs to another tool?
Yes if the Docs site is public. Talvo imports articles from a Help Scout Docs address as drafts that you publish after review, with categories and formatting converted. Restricted Docs sites can't be read, and past conversations aren't imported, so export what you need from Help Scout first.
