Put five agents and 1,000 AI chats a month on Zendesk Suite Team and the bill is $1,137.50 on annual billing. Put the same team on Freshdesk Omni Growth, Freshworks' chat-plus-email product, and it's $635. That's a gap of $502.50 a month, and it holds even though we let Freshdesk bill every one of those chats while Zendesk bills only the 60% we assume its checker lets through.
That is the short answer to "Zendesk vs Freshdesk" in 2026, but it comes with a catch the top-ranking comparisons mostly skip. Both vendors split their lineup in two, and the cheap half of each has no live chat. This post prices the same 3-, 5- and 10-person teams on the plans that do include chat, puts the two AI billing definitions side by side, and says who should pick which. Near the end there's a short section on a third option, because we make one. Every Zendesk and Freshworks number comes from the vendors' own pricing and help pages, checked October 21, 2026, in US dollars before tax.
Pick Zendesk, pick Freshdesk, or pick neither
| If this describes you | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Customers phone you and you want native telephony with IVR | Zendesk |
| You need HIPAA enablement and a choice of data center (US, EEA, UK, APAC) on a published plan | Zendesk |
| Your AI volume is high and the per-unit price matters most | Freshdesk Omni |
| You want multiple SLA policies and round-robin routing at a mid-tier price | Freshdesk (Pro or Omni Pro) |
| You only handle email tickets and want the cheapest sensible desk | Either; the entry plans are $19 each |
| You answer by chat and email, have 2 to 10 people, and per-agent pricing is the complaint | Neither; see the third option |
First, which Zendesk and which Freshdesk?
Most comparisons price the wrong product, so start here.
| Zendesk | Freshworks | |
|---|---|---|
| Email-only desk | Support Team: $19 annual, $25 monthly per agent | Freshdesk Growth: $19 annual, $23 monthly per agent |
| Chat and email together | Suite Team: $55 annual, $69 monthly | Freshdesk Omni Growth: $29 annual, $35 monthly |
| Mid tier | Suite Professional: $115 annual, $149 monthly | Freshdesk Pro $55 / $66; Omni Pro $79 / $95 |
| Top tier | Suite Enterprise, quoted by sales | Freshdesk Enterprise $89 / $107; Omni Enterprise $119 / $143 |
| Chat AI agent | Messaging AI agents from Suite Team | Omni only |
Zendesk's $19 Support Team plan is email-based; live chat and messaging begin at Suite Team. Freshworks drew the same line more recently. Its help center says "Freshdesk Omni is the multichannel product. Freshdesk is the email-first product," and the Growth card on the plain Freshdesk page reads "Launch AI-powered service over email." The chat AI agent is marked "Freshdesk Omni only" in Freshworks' help article on AI add-ons. So any list that quotes "Freshdesk $19" as a live-chat price is quoting the wrong product, and the fair match for Zendesk Suite Team ($55) is Omni Growth ($29), not Freshdesk Growth.
Both vendors also sell mid-tier plans where the serious routing and SLA features live, so the comparison below includes one row for those.
Seats, side by side
Both charge per agent. Neither states a seat cap on the paid plans, and neither has a permanent free plan.
Zendesk has no free tier at all, only a 14-day trial of Suite Professional. Freshdesk has no free card on its pricing pages either, which makes a stale line repeated by several comparisons wrong: "Freshdesk starts at $0 with a free agent tier." What exists is a Freshdesk Free program, documented in Freshworks' help center: up to two agents, free for six months, Freshdesk only and not Omni, and once you upgrade you can't switch back. Freshworks also lists a 14-day trial on its Enterprise plan. Treat the Free program as a trial with a long fuse, not a plan to build a team on.
Freshdesk adds day passes, which Zendesk doesn't list: $2, $7 or $12 a day per agent on Freshdesk Growth, Pro or Enterprise, and $5, $10 or $15 on Omni. For a seasonal rush, that's cheaper than a month of a seat. Freshdesk Pro and Enterprise also include 5,000 collaborators (external helpers who aren't paid agents), where Zendesk's equivalent is light agents: an add-on on Suite Team, and up to 100 included on Suite Professional.
- The deepest ticketing, routing and reporting of the two, with a long path from a few agents to an enterprise
- Native voice, plus social and business messaging on Suite plans
- HIPAA enablement and data center location on Suite Professional
- SSO on every plan in its pricing table, and 1,000+ listed apps
- The $19 entry plan has no chat; chat starts at $55 to $69 per agent
- Only 5 included automated resolutions per agent a month (10 on Professional), then $1.50 or $2.00 each
- Copilot ($50 per agent, yearly), QA and workforce tools are paid add-ons
- A lower seat price at every tier, and a lower AI unit price ($49 per 100 sessions)
- Multiple SLA policies, round-robin and load-balanced routing from Pro
- Day passes for seasonal help
- SAML SSO on Growth, and a Free program for up to two agents
- Chat AI needs Omni, which costs $10 more per agent than plain Growth on annual billing ($12 monthly)
- The AI meter counts sessions, not outcomes
- Freshworks' Omni page doesn't say which messaging channels each tier carries
How each one bills its AI
Both companies sell the AI by the unit, and the units mean different things.
Zendesk bills the automated resolution. Its pricing FAQ says you "pay only for customer requests that were successfully resolved by the AI agent, without any escalation to a human agent." Since May 18, 2026 an LLM reviews the transcript to confirm the resolution. Two outcomes don't count against your allowance: a "contained" resolution that fails verification, and an "assisted escalation" where a human finished. Zendesk's resolution tiers article never says in one sentence that only verified resolutions draw from the allowance. It says the other two don't, which comes to the same thing, so read that part as our reading.
Freshworks bills the session, for its Freddy AI Agent. In Freshworks' words: "A session is a unique interaction between an end-user and an AI Agent." On chat, everything within 24 hours of the session start is one session. On email, the window is 72 hours from the customer's first email. Neither vendor page says a session is refunded when the AI fails, and Freshworks doesn't say it's billed either. All we can say is that it's counted per interaction window, not per resolution. Our Freshdesk alternatives post goes through the mechanics in more detail.
| Zendesk | Freshdesk / Omni | |
|---|---|---|
| Billable unit | LLM-verified automated resolution | Session (a window of interaction with the AI agent) |
| Included | 5 per agent a month on Support and Suite Team, 10 on Professional; pooled yearly, capped at 10,000 a year per account | 500 sessions free, once per account |
| After that | $1.50 each if you commit to 100 or more, $2.00 pay-as-you-go | $49 per 100 sessions, about $0.49 each |
| Handoff to a human | Not billed (assisted escalation) | Counted as an interaction; the pages don't say it's excluded |
| At the limit | You choose: allow overage or pause the AI agent | Buy more packs; auto-recharge is optional and online-payment only |
| Window | Email 72 hours, messaging 2 hours by default (up to 72), voice until hangup | Chat 24 hours, email 72 hours |
The allowance difference matters more than it looks. Zendesk's 5 per agent is a rounding error for most teams: a 5-agent account gets 25 a month. Freshdesk's 500 free sessions are one-time, so they take the edge off month one and nothing after that.
The same team on both bills
The teams are 3 agents with 300 AI-handled conversations a month, 5 agents with 1,000, and 10 agents with 3,000. "AI-handled" means the AI agent replied at least once.
Two assumptions are ours, not vendor data. For Zendesk, 60% of AI-handled conversations become billable verified resolutions. For Freshdesk, every AI-handled conversation is one session, with no free sessions left (the one-time 500 are gone after the first month or two). We priced the cheapest plan with chat on each side: Zendesk Suite Team and Freshdesk Omni Growth. Copilot, voice and every other add-on are excluded.
Arithmetic for the middle team. Zendesk: 600 billable resolutions, less 25 included (5 agents × 5), is 575. At $1.50 that's $862.50, plus 5 seats × $55 = $275, for $1,137.50 annual. On monthly billing, 575 × $2.00 = $1,150, plus 5 × $69 = $345, for $1,495. Freshdesk Omni: 1,000 sessions at $49 per 100 is 10 packs, $490. Add 5 seats × $29 = $145 for $635 annual, or 5 × $35 = $175 for $665 monthly.
| Team | Zendesk Suite Team, annual / monthly | Freshdesk Omni Growth, annual / monthly |
|---|---|---|
| 3 agents, 300 AI-handled | $412.50 / $537 | $234 / $252 |
| 5 agents, 1,000 AI-handled | $1,137.50 / $1,495 | $635 / $665 |
| 10 agents, 3,000 AI-handled | $3,175 / $4,190 | $1,760 / $1,820 |
The 3-agent line: Zendesk is 180 resolutions less 15 included = 165 × $1.50 = $247.50 + 3 × $55 = $165, for $412.50; monthly is 165 × $2.00 = $330 + 3 × $69 = $207, for $537. Freshdesk is 3 packs, $147, plus 3 × $29 = $87 or 3 × $35 = $105. For 10 agents, Zendesk is 1,800 − 50 = 1,750 × $1.50 = $2,625 + $550 = $3,175, or 1,750 × $2 = $3,500 + $690 = $4,190. Freshdesk is 30 packs, $1,470, plus $290 or $350.
Freshdesk comes out 43% to 45% cheaper on annual billing in every row, and 53% to 57% cheaper on monthly billing. The first month is cheaper still on Freshdesk: for the 5-agent team the free 500 sessions leave 500 to buy, or $245 of AI instead of $490.
Now the stress test. Suppose Zendesk's checker lets every AI conversation through. The 5-agent team's Zendesk bill rises to 975 × $1.50 = $1,462.50, plus $275, or $1,737.50 on annual billing. Suppose instead some customers come back inside a 24-hour chat window, so Freshdesk counts fewer sessions than we did. Its bill falls. Neither move closes the gap, because the per-unit prices differ by a factor of three. The limit on this result is that it prices both AI agents at identical volumes. If Zendesk's AI finishes far more of your conversations than Freddy does, the lower bill buys you less.
The mid-tier is where Zendesk's feature case sits, so here's the 5-agent team on Suite Professional and Omni Pro, with 1,000 AI conversations:
| 5 agents, 1,000 AI-handled | Annual | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Suite Professional | 5 × $115 = $575, plus (600 − 50) × $1.50 = $825: $1,400 | 5 × $149 = $745, plus 550 × $2.00 = $1,100: $1,845 |
| Freshdesk Omni Pro | 5 × $79 = $395, plus $490: $885 | 5 × $95 = $475, plus $490: $965 |
For email-only teams, the entry plans are close: Zendesk Support Team is $19 annual / $25 monthly, and Freshdesk Growth is $19 / $23 with an Email AI Agent on the 72-hour session window.
For the full plan grids, see Zendesk pricing in 2026 and Freshdesk pricing in 2026. For how the AI meters compare across more vendors, there's AI resolution pricing compared, and Zendesk vs Intercom runs the same exercise against Intercom.
Routing, SLAs and workflow depth
This is where Zendesk's higher price buys something. Zendesk puts SLAs, skills-based routing and multiple ticket forms on Suite Professional, and its Action Builder gives up to 40K actions a month on Suite Team and 100K on Professional. Reporting steps up from prebuilt dashboards with 24-hour refresh to custom exploration with hourly refresh.
Freshdesk gets to a similar place for less. On Pro, Freshworks' compare table lists multiple SLA policies, round-robin and load-balanced assignment, group-specific business hours, custom dashboards and ticket templates. Skill-based assignment waits for Enterprise, while Zendesk includes skills-based routing on Professional. Freshdesk's pricing page source also mentions SLA management on Growth, but its compare table doesn't list it, so ask before you count on it.
If your queue is a dozen routing rules and a few SLAs, Freshdesk Pro covers it for less. If you run several brands, custom objects, or a large Action Builder footprint, Zendesk is the deeper platform.
Voice, channels and compliance
For phone, Zendesk is the one with a product you can price: embedded voice, recording and voicemail from Suite Team, IVR, callbacks and monitoring on Professional, with numbers and minutes as add-ons. Zendesk's AI agents handle voice only if you use Zendesk voice. Freshworks lists bring-your-own-telephony on Omni Pro and Enterprise, and sells Freshcaller voice separately (it's listed on the Freshchat page) with starting prices of $15, $39 and $69 per agent a month on annual billing for Growth, Pro and Enterprise. Freshworks doesn't spell out how Freshcaller bundles with Omni, so ask before you assume.
Messaging is where Zendesk is easier to read. Suite plans cover web messaging, live chat, Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, Slack and WeChat, with SMS as an add-on. Freshworks' Omni page says "Omnichannel support" on Growth but doesn't list which channels each tier includes, so ask what Omni Growth covers beyond chat and email before you buy.
Compliance gates differ. On Zendesk, HIPAA enablement and data center location appear on Suite Professional, and signing a BAA also requires the Advanced Compliance add-on, which isn't priced publicly. Zendesk's trust center lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and others. SSO is on every plan in its pricing table. On Freshdesk, SAML SSO is on Growth; audit logs, IP allowlisting and JWT authentication are Enterprise features. Freshworks' trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 but not HIPAA, and its pricing pages don't say which plans get a data-center choice, so confirm both in writing if a security review needs them.
A third option for small teams: Talvo
If your team is 2 to 10 people answering customers by chat and email, and the per-agent math is what sent you to this comparison, there is a different pricing shape. Talvo, which we make, prices the workspace, not the seat. Starter is $49 a month ($39 billed annually) for 5 teammates and 100 AI resolutions, Growth is $149 ($119) for 15 teammates and 500, and Scale is $299 ($249) for 25 and 2,000. Extra resolutions are $0.49 each, the same per-unit price as Freshdesk's packs. A hand-off to a human is never billed.
A Talvo resolution is a conversation the AI agent answered end to end from your published help articles, with no teammate stepping in, counted once. It shows which article it used.

Here are the three teams again at the same 60% assumption we gave Zendesk (180, 600 and 1,800 resolutions). For Talvo we take the plan with the lowest total among those with enough teammate seats, overage included, separately for monthly and annual billing.
The 3-person team is cheapest on Starter: $49 + (180 − 100) × $0.49 = $88.20 monthly, or $39 + $39.20 = $78.20 annual. The 5-person team is cheapest on Growth: $149 + (600 − 500) × $0.49 = $198 monthly, or $119 + $49 = $168 annual. The 10-person team needs Growth or Scale, and Scale wins at $299 monthly or $249 annual with 2,000 included, against $149 + (1,800 − 500) × $0.49 = $786 on Growth monthly.
| Team | Talvo monthly billing | Talvo annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| 3 teammates, 180 resolutions | $88.20 (Starter) | $78.20 (Starter) |
| 5 teammates, 600 resolutions | $198 (Growth) | $168 (Growth) |
| 10 teammates, 1,800 resolutions | $299 (Scale) | $249 (Scale) |
That is the 60% case. Freshdesk counts AI sessions per interaction window, not per resolution, so for a like-for-like check, here is Talvo billing all of them (300, 1,000 and 3,000). The 3-person team costs $147 monthly on Starter ($49 + 200 × $0.49) or $119 annual on Growth. The 5-person team costs $299 monthly or $249 annual on Scale. The 10-person team costs $789 monthly ($299 + 1,000 × $0.49) or $739 annual ($249 + $490) on Scale. Those are Talvo's bills if every AI chat were billable. Even then Talvo comes in under Freshdesk Omni for all three teams (for the 5-person team, $249 annual against $635), before you weigh what Freshdesk's seats include that Talvo's workspace doesn't.
Talvo has a shared inbox with internal notes, @mentions, canned responses with variables, and email threading in the same conversation. On Growth it adds routing rules (including round-robin, which skips Viewers and anyone marked Away but doesn't check who is online), SLA policies and saved views.

The gaps are large, and for some readers disqualifying. There's no phone or voice, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Messenger. There's no SOC 2 report, SAML single sign-on, HIPAA support or data-region choice (data is processed in the United States). There's no skills-based routing, no customer ticket portal, and no app marketplace; integrations today are a REST API, webhooks and Slack. There's no AI spending cap, only an on/off switch for the AI. Talvo launched in 2026, is in beta, and has no review-site ratings or case studies yet.
Moving over is mostly a help-center job: Talvo imports articles from a Zendesk or Freshdesk help center by address, which is the slow part of a switch. Past tickets don't come across, and contacts import from CSV. Our head-to-heads cover the details: Talvo vs Zendesk and Talvo vs Freshdesk, and per-seat vs flat pricing explains when each model wins.

Before you sign either contract
The sticker prices won't settle this. What each vendor counts, and whether you need a feature only one of them sells, will.
- Do customers call you? If yes, price Zendesk's telephony first and ask Freshworks what bring-your-own-telephony costs for your team
- Confirm you are pricing the right products: Suite Team against Omni Growth for chat, Support Team against Freshdesk Growth for email only
- Count how many of last month's AI-eligible chats the AI could finish; apply it to Zendesk's resolutions and to Freshdesk's sessions
- Check which tier holds your must-haves: SLAs and skills routing (Zendesk Professional), multiple SLAs and round-robin (Freshdesk Pro)
- Ask Freshworks which messaging channels your Omni tier includes, and ask both vendors about HIPAA and data location in writing
- Run each trial on real conversations for a full week with the AI turned on
If you want a wider field than two, Zendesk alternatives for small teams and Freshdesk alternatives price the same team across more tools.
Which should you choose?
- your team is 2 to 10 people answering by chat and email, and per-agent pricing is the main complaint
- you want a flat workspace price with AI resolutions at $0.49 beyond an included amount, and hand-offs never billed
- you can live without voice, WhatsApp, SMS, social channels, SOC 2 and HIPAA, and accept a beta product with no reviews yet
- Choose Zendesk if customers phone you, you need HIPAA enablement or a data center region, or you want the deepest routing and reporting
- Choose Freshdesk if price matters most and you want multiple SLA policies and round-robin routing on a mid-tier plan
- Choose Freshdesk Omni, not plain Freshdesk, if you want chat and its AI agent
Frequently asked questions
Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zendesk?
On the plans with live chat, yes. For 5 agents and 1,000 AI-handled chats a month, Freshdesk Omni Growth comes to $635 on annual billing against $1,137.50 for Zendesk Suite Team, assuming 60% of chats become billable Zendesk resolutions and every chat counts as a Freshdesk session. The email-only entry plans are close: $19 a month per agent on annual billing at both.
Does Freshdesk still have a free plan?
Not as a plan on its pricing pages. Freshworks documents a Freshdesk Free program: up to two agents, free for six months, for Freshdesk only and not Omni. After you upgrade to a paid plan you can't switch back, so treat it as a long trial.
What is the difference between Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni?
Freshworks calls Freshdesk the email-first product and Freshdesk Omni the multichannel product. Growth is $19 a month per agent on annual billing for Freshdesk and $29 for Omni. The chat AI agent is marked as Omni only; plain Freshdesk gets an Email AI Agent.
How does Freddy AI pricing work?
Freddy AI Agent is billed per session. Each account gets 500 free sessions once, then packs of 100 sessions cost $49, about $0.49 each. A session is any unique interaction between a customer and the AI agent, counted over a 24-hour window on chat and a 72-hour window on email, not per resolution.
What is a Zendesk automated resolution?
It is a request the AI agent resolved without escalation to a human, and since May 18, 2026 an LLM checks the transcript to verify it. Support Team and Suite Team include 5 per agent a month and Professional includes 10, then each extra is $1.50 if you commit to 100 or more, or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
Which is better for small business, Zendesk or Freshdesk?
For most teams under about ten agents without phone support or compliance needs, Freshdesk is the cheaper fit, particularly Omni if you want chat and its AI agent. Zendesk makes sense when you need native voice, HIPAA enablement, a data center region or deeper routing. A flat-price tool such as Talvo is a third option for chat-and-email teams of 2 to 10, with real gaps.
Does Freshdesk have live chat?
Freshdesk Omni does. Freshworks describes plain Freshdesk as the email-first product, and the chat AI agent is marked as Omni only. Freshchat is a separate live-chat product that also bills Freddy AI by session. Zendesk's chat starts on Suite Team at $55 a month per agent on annual billing.
Which has better phone support, Zendesk or Freshdesk?
Zendesk has native voice: embedded voice, recording and voicemail from Suite Team, and IVR, callbacks and monitoring on Professional, with numbers and minutes as add-ons. Freshworks lists bring-your-own-telephony on Omni Pro and Enterprise and sells Freshcaller voice separately, from $15 a month per agent on annual billing; ask how it bundles with Omni.
