Is Freshchat the same as Freshdesk? No, and that confusion is where most Freshchat alternative searches start. Freshworks sells Freshdesk for email ticketing, Freshchat for live chat, and Freshdesk Omni for both, each with its own price list and its own rules for the Freddy AI agent. Pick the wrong one and you either pay for ticketing you don't use or discover your chat bot isn't included.
This post is for a chat-first team of 2 to 25 weighing Talvo against Freshworks' chat products. It covers all three, shows the same team priced on each, and says plainly where Freshworks is the better buy. We make Talvo, so every Freshworks number comes from Freshworks' own pages, checked October 21, 2026, in US dollars before tax, with the sums shown. For Freshdesk's full price grid, see Freshdesk pricing, and for a wider list of options, Freshdesk alternatives.
Freshdesk, Freshchat or Omni: which one are you comparing?
| Freshdesk | Freshchat | Freshdesk Omni | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Email ticketing | Live chat and messaging | Both in one |
| Has a chat widget and chat AI | No chat AI; it has an Email AI Agent | Yes, Freddy AI on paid plans | Yes, the Chat AI Agent is Omni only |
| Ticketing, portal and knowledge base | Yes | Team inbox; connects email | Yes |
| Growth, per agent a month (annual / monthly) | $19 / $23 | $19 / $23 | $29 / $35 |
| Free plan | None; a 6-month, 2-agent Free program | Up to 10 agents, no Freddy AI | None |
Freshworks' own help center says it directly: "Freshdesk Omni is the multichannel product. Freshdesk is the email-first product." So if you want chat and email under one roof you're looking at Omni, or Freshdesk and Freshchat as two separate subscriptions, which costs $38 per agent on annual Growth plans. Pro and Enterprise run $49 and $79 on Freshchat, and $55 and $89 on Freshdesk.
For this post, "Freshworks" means Freshchat Growth for a chat-only setup, and Omni Growth for chat plus email.
A session is not a resolution
The biggest practical difference is what the AI meter counts. Freshworks bills Freddy AI Agent per session, and it defines one this way: "A session is a unique interaction between an end-user and an AI Agent." On chat, all interactions within 24 hours of the session start are one session. On email, the window is 72 hours from the customer's first email. After 500 free sessions, granted once per account, it costs $49 per 100, about $0.49 each. Freshdesk pricing has the full mechanics.
Talvo bills a resolution: a conversation the AI answered end to end from your published knowledge base, with no teammate stepping in, counted once per conversation. A hand-off to a human is never billed. The rate is also $0.49 per resolution past the included 100, 500 or 2,000 a month.
So the per-unit price is identical, and the unit is what differs. Freshworks counts the interaction window, not the outcome, and it doesn't say whether a session is billed when the AI fails or hands off. Take one chat the AI couldn't answer. On our reading, that chat opened a session. On Talvo it isn't a resolution, so it costs nothing. How much that matters depends on how often your AI succeeds, which is why we suggest measuring it (AI resolution rate).
Also, the 500 free sessions are one-time, not monthly. That is easy to misread, and it changes the math.

The same team on Freshworks and on Talvo
We priced three teams: 3 agents with 300 AI-handled conversations a month, 5 with 1,000, and 10 with 3,000. We assumed one Freddy session per conversation. For Talvo we assumed the AI fully resolves 60% of them (180, 600 and 1,800), and chose the cheapest plan with enough teammate seats, including overage, per billing mode. The volumes and the 60% are our assumptions, not vendor figures.
Each cell reads annual billing, then monthly billing.
| Team A: 3 agents | Team B: 5 agents | Team C: 10 agents | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshchat Growth, month 1 | $57 / $69 | $340 / $360 | $1,415 / $1,455 |
| Freshchat Growth, steady state | $204 / $216 | $585 / $605 | $1,660 / $1,700 |
| Omni Growth (chat plus email), month 1 | $87 / $105 | $390 / $420 | $1,515 / $1,575 |
| Omni Growth, steady state | $234 / $252 | $635 / $665 | $1,760 / $1,820 |
| Talvo, any month | $78.20 / $88.20 | $168 / $198 | $249 / $299 |
How the Freshchat rows work, for Team B on annual billing: seats are 5 × $19 = $95. Month 1 uses the 500 free sessions, so the other 500 are 5 packs, $245, for $340. After that, all 1,000 sessions are 10 packs, $490, for $585. Omni Growth seats are 5 × $29 = $145, so $390 and $635. On monthly billing, seats are $115 for Freshchat Growth and $175 for Omni.
Talvo's rows, using the cheapest total among plans with enough seats. Team A (180 resolutions): Starter is $39 annual plus 80 resolutions past the 100 included at $0.49, which is $39.20, so $78.20; monthly it is $49 + $39.20 = $88.20. Team B (600): Starter would be $39 + 500 × $0.49 = $284, so Growth wins at $119 + 100 × $0.49 = $168 annual, or $149 + $49 = $198 monthly. Team C (1,800, 10 people): Starter is out on seats, and Scale at $249 annual or $299 monthly (2,000 included) beats Growth at $119 + 1,300 × $0.49 = $756.
The pattern: Freshworks gets cheaper in the first month and more expensive from the second, because the free pool runs out. Team C's pool is gone in the first week. Talvo doesn't change month to month, and it bills the AI's resolved conversations rather than every one it touched. If you want copilot-style help for agents, Freddy Copilot is $29 a month per agent on annual billing ($35 monthly) and only on Pro and Enterprise.
Where Freshworks is the better pick
Freshchat Free is the clearest example. It covers up to 10 agents with a chat widget, team inbox, email connection and roles, plus 100 campaign contacts a month. Talvo's Free plan covers 2 teammates. Freddy AI isn't on Freshchat Free, so for a bot you'd need a paid plan; on Talvo Free you get 25 AI resolutions a month during the beta.
Beyond that, Freshworks has channels Talvo lacks. Freshchat Growth adds Facebook, Instagram, SMS, WhatsApp, LINE and Google Business Messages, and voice is available through Freshcaller. Talvo has none of those. WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram and Messenger are on the roadmap; phone isn't.
Security and maturity favor Freshworks too. Its trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 3 and ISO 27001 and 27701, and the compare table ticks SAML SSO on every Freshchat plan, including Free. Talvo has no SOC 2 report, SAML SSO, HIPAA support or data-region choice.
And Freshdesk is a genuine ticketing system: a customer portal, multiple SLA policies, skill-based assignment on Enterprise and a sandbox. Talvo has no customer ticket portal, its SLA policies are Growth and simpler, and its routing is rule-based first match plus round-robin by whoever was assigned least recently. It doesn't check who's online or cap chats per person.
Capterra review summaries mention bugs, weak email handling and billing disputes at Freshdesk, with praise for ease of use and quick setup. Treat that as directional. Talvo launched in 2026, is in beta and has no reviews yet.
- Freshchat Free for up to 10 agents
- WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook, Instagram and LINE on Freshchat Growth, plus voice
- SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and SAML SSO on every Freshchat tier
- Real ticketing depth with a customer portal
- Three products and three price ladders
- Freddy bills per session and the 500 free are one-time
- Chat AI needs Omni or Freshchat; plain Freshdesk has an Email AI Agent
- Copilot costs extra and starts at Pro
Where Talvo fits
Talvo is one product and one bill for a chat-first team: a live chat widget, an AI agent that answers only from published articles and shows the one it used, a shared inbox with two-way email, a hosted help center and workflows. Plans are per workspace: Starter $49 a month ($39 annual) for 5 teammates and 100 resolutions, Growth $149 ($119) for 15 and 500, Scale $299 ($249) for 25 and 2,000, with extras at $0.49.

Email works by forwarding your support address into Talvo. Replies go out from Talvo's sending address under your workspace name, thread back into the same conversation, and don't appear in your Gmail Sent folder. There's no custom sending domain. Attachments work in both directions.
The gaps again, in one list: no WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram, Messenger or phone; no customer ticket portal; no SOC 2, SAML SSO or HIPAA; no marketplace of apps, just a REST API, webhooks and Slack; "Powered by Talvo" can't be removed; beta, no reviews. If you need any of those, stay on Freshworks.
Moving from Freshdesk or Freshchat
Help articles and contacts move; tickets and chat history don't, so keep Freshworks read-only or on a cheaper plan for your records. Freshdesk is on Talvo's list of help-center importers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Freshchat the same as Freshdesk?
No. Freshdesk is Freshworks' email-first ticketing product, Freshchat is its live chat and messaging product, and Freshdesk Omni combines the two. Each has its own price list, and the Chat AI Agent is Omni only within the Freshdesk family.
Do I need both Freshdesk and Freshchat?
Only if you want ticketing and chat from separate products. Freshdesk Omni covers both for $29, $79 or $119 per agent a month on annual billing, while Freshdesk Growth and Freshchat Growth together cost $38 per agent.
What is Freshdesk Omni?
Freshdesk Omni is the multichannel version of Freshdesk, sold separately from plain Freshdesk. It costs $29, $79 and $119 per agent a month on annual billing, or $35, $95 and $143 monthly, and it includes the Chat AI Agent that plain Freshdesk lacks.
Does Freshdesk still have a free plan?
Not a permanent one. Freshworks documents a Free program for Freshdesk only, covering up to two agents for six months. Freshchat, the chat product, has a Free plan for up to 10 agents without Freddy AI.
What is a Freddy AI session, and how much does it cost?
A session is a unique interaction between a customer and the AI Agent: all interactions within 24 hours on chat, or within 72 hours of the first email. After 500 free sessions, granted once per account, Freddy costs $49 per 100 sessions, about $0.49 each.
What is the best Freshchat alternative for a small team?
It depends on what you need. Freshchat Free suits up to 10 agents without AI, Crisp and Tidio suit stores and more channels, and Talvo suits chat and email teams that want one workspace price and AI at $0.49 per resolution. Talvo is in beta, so read its gaps first.
Can I move from Freshdesk or Freshchat to Talvo?
Partly. Talvo imports your public Freshdesk help center as draft articles and contacts from a CSV of up to 2,000 rows. Tickets and chat history are not imported, so keep Freshworks available for your records.
